Column: Celebrate moms, summer and Delta County

ESCANABA — Mother’s Day is just around the corner, coming up in two weeks on May 12. It’s a time to celebrate and cherish our mothers and also a moment to look ahead with excitement to the beautiful Delta County summer that awaits us. As we bask in the warmth of the approaching season, filled with hope and optimism, it’s impossible not to feel an overwhelming sense of positivity about our community’s growth and direction.

For me, these sentiments are deeply intertwined with the spirit of my own mother, who radiates optimism and positivity wherever she goes. Her unwavering belief in the power of positivity has instilled in me a profound sense of gratitude for our community and a boundless enthusiasm for the upcoming summer season.

Summer in Delta County is not just a season; it’s a vibrant tapestry of tourism, growth, and opportunity. The trajectory of commerce in our community has been steadily rising, with each year surpassing the last in terms of visitors and economic activity. In 2023 alone, we witnessed a remarkable 13.9% increase in overnight stays and a 17.2% surge in traffic compared to the record-breaking year of 2022. These numbers, sourced from Placer.ai’s geotracking data, paint a picture of a thriving community poised for another extraordinary year.

As we look forward to the summer of 2024, there is a palpable sense of excitement and anticipation. Our community is bustling with new lodging options, exciting attractions, and a burgeoning live music scene. The allure of our pristine shorelines, renowned walleye fishing, and accessible beaches continues to draw visitors from far and wide.

Delta County boasts more shoreline than any other county in Michigan, earning it a well-deserved reputation as a coastal paradise. Anglers flock to our bays, affectionately known as the “walleye capital of the world,” while beach enthusiasts revel in the splendor of our picturesque shores. The growing live music scene adds to the vibrancy of our community, offering entertainment and cultural experiences for residents and visitors alike.

As we approach Mother’s Day on May 12, let us not only celebrate the incredible women in our lives but also take a moment to appreciate the abundance of blessings that surround us. Our community is thriving, our future is bright, and together, we can embrace the summer ahead with open arms and boundless enthusiasm.

Wishing you all a joyful anticipation of Mother’s Day and a summer filled with love, laughter, and endless possibilities.
