Escanaba artist featured in Marquette gallery, reception May 24

Lauren Hovland

MARQUETTE — Lauren Hovland is the featured artist at The Gallery, Marquette’s Sarosik Rotation Gallery. She is an Escanaba based freelance artist. Originally from Minnesota, Hovland and her family also lived overseas in Muscat, Oman when she was young. The people and culture continue to be influential in her work and life. She learned how to do henna and the Mehndi inspired designs can often be found in her work.

Hovland’s work focuses on portraits but does branch off to other subjects periodically, combining portrait work with nature or her love of celestial images. She enjoys working in a variety of mediums, though she mainly works in paint and digital art.

This solo exhibit is open now through June 1. The Sarosik Rotation Gallery is located within The Gallery, Marquette. The gallery is open seven days a week, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended spring and summer hours. It is located at 130 W. Washington, in Marquette.

There will be a reception for Hovland’s during the city of Marquette’s Artwalk on Saturday, May 24 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Judy Sarosik, a beloved teacher, artist, and gallery member passed away in November of 2022. She loved being a part of the gallery community and she wanted to donate sales of some of her work to The Gallery, a Project of the Marquette Artist Collective. Through conversations with her, her husband Roy, and the gallery members, it was decided to create a special “Judy Fund” to help support the gallery, build a rotation gallery in her name, and to offer support to artists.

The Sarosik Rotation Gallery was then designed by gallery manager Joy Bender Hadley and Mike Potts and built by Tamarack Custom Builders with over half of the cost donated in-kind. This exhibit celebrates the one year anniversary of opening the Sararosik Gallery. Any work sold during a rotation exhibit has a low commission for the exhibitor and the funds help to create sustainable project.

The Gallery, Marquette has a full and exciting 2025-2026 calendar of rotations in their “Judy Sarosik Gallery.”

The exhibits change every four to six weeks and offer all mediums of work from artists throughout the Upper Peninsula, as well as several themed invitationals. The Gallery, Marquette also offers space for Artist Market Pop Ups, Art Demonstrations, and in the main gallery they feature work from eighteen regional artist members.
