ESCANABA – The Escanaba Public Library’s Winter Reading Challenge has begun. Open to adults and teens, the program encourages readers to get through eight books in eight weeks — preferably selections that push the boundaries of their comfort zones. The challenge runs from January 12 through March 7. Participants can pick up a reading log at 400 Ludington St. from the library’s circulation desk or drive-up window.

“The challenge is to read and experience something different,” said Adult Services Librarian Monique Ciofu. “Eight titles, eight weeks and eight weekly winners. If you complete the book log each week, you are eligible to enter the weekly drawing for a $25 gift card. At the end of the program on March 7, if you have completed all eight weekly challenges, you are eligible to enter the drawing for the big prize, a Book Lovers basket which includes a gift card.”

Each week, participants are challenged to read something different. The library recommends readers choose titles that expand their horizons. Suggestions include reading about an unfamiliar place, picking up a biography that might change the reader’s perception, learning from a book that teaches how to do something, diving into a genre that might be surprising, exploring the work of a new author and otherwise taking chances.

Library staff are always happy to recommend a book title or author or refer patrons to online resources like Novelist for ideas. Any format, including e-books, audiobooks, large print, a CD book or graphic novel, can be used for the reading challenge. Digital titles may be found on the Great Lakes Digital Library at https://gldl.overdrive.com.

The Winter Reading Challenge is possible with the support of the Friends of the Escanaba Public Library. The Escanaba Public Library is located within the City Hall building in downtown Escanaba. The library’s hours during the winter are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.
