Not your average musician, 26-year-old Travis Porath/Lavigne has a natural affinity for beatboxing. For those unschooled as I was, Wikipedia describes it as “a form of vocal percussion primarily involving the art of mimicking drum machines using one’s mouth, lips, tongue, and voice.”
“I heard about beatboxing from my brother, Blade” said Travis, who goes by the stage name of Swiftyy Beatbox. “What sparked my interest was the sounds that you can make and the beats that you can make out of the sounds.”
And he should know, having caught the beatboxing bug by the tender age of 10.
“The first time I performed in public was shocking,” he recalled, and considers it the highlight of his musical career to date. “I loved the crowd after my performance,” he said.
His audience at The Maxx in Iron Mountain warmly received Swiftyy’s unique gift. But unlike some performers, he didn’t let it go to his head. “I just want to show people what beatboxing is about,” he said simply.
Though normally a solo performer, Travis is open to collaborating with other local musicians.
