Cougars fall to Nordics in conference action

EBEN JUNCTION — The Superior Central girls tried their best to control the pace in a non-conference basketball game here Monday night. It was the Felch North Dickinson Nordics who picked it up in the second half, however, as they handed the Cougars a 42-19 loss. The shorthanded Cougars, with just six available players, elected to run a delay offense which helped keep them in the game into the third quarter. ESCANABA — The Escanaba boys got a much needed win here Saturday, topping the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils 59-48 in a non-conference basketball match-up on Parents’ Day. MANISTIQUE — A stingy man-to-man defense set the tone for the Gladstone girls here Thursday night as they rolled to a 75-19 basketball victory over the Manistique Emeralds. The Braves led 24-5 after the first quarter and 49-13 at halftime of this non-conference game. “Our focus was on defense,” Braves’ coach Andy Cretens said. “We worked on our rotation and made sure they weren’t one step ahead of us. ESCANABA - The Escanaba boys hockey team rolled to a 5-1 victory over Grandville here Thursday. Senior Nolan Bink led the way for the Eskymos as he scored the first goal with 1:42 in the first quarter on assists by Graham Johnson and Henry Sholten to put the Eskymos up 1-0 and scored again with 13:37 to go in the third period unassisted to put the Eskymos up 3-1.
