Campground nears completion

MANISTIQUE — Long-running efforts to construct and open a new municipal campground in Manistique are expected to finally be completed later this year, according to officials involved with the project. This 56-site campground, officially known as the Manistique Lakeshore Campground, will be located near the intersection of U.S. 2 and Trader’s Point Drive.

“Right now, we’re looking toward opening up at least the campground portion of this project mid-summer,” Kevin Trevillian said. Trevillian is a principal with Coleman Engineering Company, which worked with the city to design the campground and to acquire the 22 acres of property being used for the project.

Manistique City Manager Sheila Aldrich stated that work has been going smoothly on the campground project so far.

“The campground is coming along as planned,” she wrote.

While the Manistique Lakeshore Campground has been in the planning stages for almost a decade, construction on the project began in 2016.

“Last summer and into the fall, a great majority of the underground utility work was completed,” Trevillian said. This work was done by Olsen and Olsen Building Contractors, Inc., the primary contractor for the project.

Currently, construction work is being done on three buildings at the campground. These include a building that will contain public restrooms and showers, an office building for guest registration, and a day use pavilion (which will also contain public restrooms).

Trevillian said the campground will offer a wide variety of amenities to campers. Wi-Fi will be available at the campground, and 50 of its campsites will include hookups for electricity, water, sewers, and cable television.

“It’s a fully modern campground facility,” he said.

There will also be six “primitive” sites at the campground. These sites will only include hookups for electricity.

According to Aldrich, campers will be able to reserve their campsites online. A dedicated website is being designed by Kelley Marketing for this purpose.

“The site will be very interactive, and you will be able to click on the site you wish to reserve, see a picture and description of the site, and check the availability on the dates you wish to reserve,” Aldrich wrote.

Trevillian said that some elements of the campground, including the pavilion, may not be ready for public use immediately after it opens.

“It might be the fall till that’s complete,” he said.

However, Trevillian said he is confident that the campground project will be a success.

“I think it’s gonna be a fantastic facility,” he said.

Starting at $3.50/week.
