The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) announced all fishing license fees in the State of Michigan will be waived this weekend for their winter Free Fishing Weekend event. Two days twice a year, families and friends can enjoy one of Michigan’s premier outdoor activities, Michigan fishing, for free.
Residents and out-of-state visitors may enjoy fishing on both inland and Great Lakes waters for all species of fish. All fishing regulations will still apply.
A Recreation Passport will not be required for entry into state parks and boating access sites during Free Fishing Weekends.
Anglers are encouraged to review ice safety tips on the MDNR’s website, https://www.michigan.gov/dnr/education/safety-info/ice.
Another Free Fishing Weekend will be held this summer in conjunction with “Three Free” weekend, where residents and nonresidents can grab a fishing rod, ride the off-road trails and visit state parks and boating access sites – all free of charge.
During Free ORV Weekend, Michigan residents and visitors legally can ride without buying an ORV license or trail permit. All other ORV rules and laws still apply. For more information about Free ORV Weekends, visit Michigan.gov/ORVInfo.
2026 Free Fishing Weekend dates:
– Winter: Feb. 14-15
– Summer: June 13-14
Future Free Fishing Weekends follow a set annual schedule. The winter event is always the Saturday and Sunday of President’s Day weekend, and the summer event is always the Saturday and Sunday following the first full week of June.
