Veteran trappers help beginners at workshop

HERMANSVILLE — Once again, the Community Center in Hermansville will be the site of the 15th Annual New Trappers Workshop Saturday, Feb. 1, starting at 8 a.m. and ending approximately 4 p.m. CST. There will be a number of local veteran trappers on hand, all of whom will be willing to share tips, techniques, stories and maybe even some secrets of the sport of fur harvesting.

“I look back to my early days as a youngster trying to find success on the trapline and now wish that there was a Young Trappers Workshop in those days. It sure would have shortened my learning curve. When I was a youngster, the old-time veteran trappers were not very willing to share tips, methods or anything about trapping, so I had to learn on my own. I guess this is why I take such great pleasure and pride in the fact that I can share what I have learned through a lifetime of trapping with the youngsters and newcomers just starting out,” said Dennis Girardi, a longtime member of U.P. Trappers District 3.

Along with all the experienced trappers on hand, the event will feature trapping demonstrations by Jim Fornetti and Clint Seawright. Seawright is a registered fur buyer and will be available for anyone wanting to sell their harvest.

Admission is free and food and refreshments will be available. All beginning trappers will be treated to a trapping “starter kit.” Raffles, prizes, contests and other fun things will be happening. Each young trapper will be winning a guaranteed door prize.
