U.P trappers host annual workshop

HERMANSVILLE — The members of U.P. Trappers District 3 will (for the 14th time) put on a workshop for youngsters and any persons interested in becoming trappers. This annual event will be held at the Community Center in Hermansville on Feb. 2. Start time is 8 a.m. CST and the last event will begin at 2:30 p.m.

Many members of the group of veteran trappers will be on hand to offer tips, advice and tales of the trapline to all attendees. The old image of trappers being guarded and secretive about their methods is certainly not the case with these trappers. Most of these gentlemen, likely clad in flannel and camo and sporting hair and beards of grey, are more than willing to share their trapping secrets with all attendees. The goal of the group is to ensure the heritage of trapping as an outdoor sport continues, and to get kids and new trappers interested in the sport.

Activities for the day include demos by: Rich Clark (Willow Tree Furs; professional fur handler) on proper fur preparation for sale. Clint Seawright (Skunk Creek Trapping Supply) on raccoon, mink and muskrat trapping. Jim Fornetti on weasel trapping.

All youngsters attending will win a door prize and will be given a weasel startup kit (trap, box, and lure) or a dog-proof coon trap. There will be raffles throughout the day. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. The public is invited and admission is free.

“We are pleased to once again host this event,” said Doug Zajdel, a longtime member of U.P. Trappers. “It is a fun filled learning event and it is great to see all the happy youngsters who can’t wait to try out their new trapping equipment and knowledge in the field.
