ESCANABA -- Bay College basketball teams kicked off the 2026-27 season with the Terrace Bay Tip-Off Classic on Halloween weekend. There were plenty of tricks and treats over the weekend as Jayden Brown had a monster weekend with a pair of dunks during their game against Minnesota North-Hibbing as Brown finished the game with 30 points to go with three rebounds three assists and three steals.
"My shot felt really good tonight," Brown said. "My teammates did a good job of finding me and it made it really easy but I couldn't have done it without them."
Sophomore Emerson Droubie and freshman Damonte Duncan each had 14 points and freshman Kayden Travis had 11 points off the bench.
The Norse were suffocating on defense as Hibbing shot only 36 percent from the floor and only 11 percent from downtown on 2-18 from beyond the perimeter.
"It all starts on the defensive end," Norse coach Mike Cretens said. "My biggest worry coming in was our defensive effort i'm a defensive guy myself and if you give effort it give teams fits and you see shooting numbers like we forced in this game and we did it for 40 minutes which is really hard to do at the college level"
Jaylen Haynes led the way for Hibbing with 21 points and Justin Neubert added 18 points.
"We still have a lot of work to do here," Krowiorz said. "I was disappointed in our overall effort on the defensive side, we have a long way to go to get to where we need to be."
The Norse continued their momentum into their game with Minnesota North-Itasca as they came out with a 98-85 victory.
Brown led the way again for the Norse with 25 points to go along with six rebounds. Kayden Travis added 20 points off the bench as well as three rebounds, two assists and two steals Damonte Duncan finished with 14 points for the second straight game. The Norse won the bench scoring battle for the second straight game as they outscored Itasca 38-25.
Itasca had four in double figures led by Isael Moronta-Mendez who finished with 19. Yesiff Aikens added 18, Khalil Hudgins added 13 and Kayden Kaat had 12. Itasca shot 40 percent from the field as the Norse shot 41 percent the difference came on the line as Bay shot 91 percent from the stripe on 34-37 from the line compared to 78 percent for Itasca on 25-35.
The Norse women also kicked off their season but it wasn't as good of a start as they fell 86-68. The Norse were more competitive in the second half as each team scored 42 points in the second half.
"We got off to a really slow start," Norse coach James Fassett said. "Their press gave us troubles that it really shouldn't have caused us but they pulled off the press in the second half and we were able to make some shots and I feel really did a better job of executing."
The Norse were led by Olivia Kelly-Taylor off the bench with 18 points. Chloe Robinson and Hayley Taylor each had a dozen and Kennedy Robinson added 10 points.
Jackson had five in double figures led by Madleen Hussein with 15 points.
