HOUGHTON -- Edye Burdett concluded a successful cross country season by winning the girls' Division 3 race here in Saturday's Upper Peninsula Finals.

The Superior Central freshman covered the hilly 3.1-mile course in 19 minutes, 55 seconds on this sunny and very warm afternoon on the Michigan Tech trails.

"I'm super happy with how everything went today," she said. "I was hoping to run with (Marquette freshman) Charlotte Jones this year. I was very, very fortunate with the results. This is certainly a motivator."

Burdett was followed by Ewen-Trout Creek senior Bree Besonen at 20:46.7, Crystal Falls Forest Park freshman Ellie Zaupa (21:59) and Rapid River sophomore Evonna LaCosse (22:01.1).

L'Anse retained its title with 38 points. The Purple Hornets were followed by E-TC 74, Rapid River 82 and Superior Central 86.

Rapid River sophomore Julia Poma also reached the podium by taking 11th (23:22.8).

Rock Mid Peninsula junior Vivian Norden took 12th (23:29.5) and Superior Central junior Kendra Pederson was 14th (23:37.6).

"The Ewen-Trout Creek girls really ran a good race today," Rockets' coach Zach Truitt said. "Evonna really ran well and the other girls ran a good race. Julia ran a phenomenal race and Edye ran fantastic."

Cedarville-DeTour was crowned boys' champion with 78 points. St. Ignace and Rapid River scored 86, followed by Mid Pen 87 and last year's champ Forest Park 108.

This marked the first U.P. title since 2004 for Cedarville which was led by two-time individual champ, senior Ethan Snyder, at 16:51.4. He was followed by Engadine junior Nate Stielstra (17:58.2) and Islanders' junior Liam Bohn (18:02.4).

Mid Pen sophomore Ashdeyn Gerow was the area's pacesetter in sixth (18:18.1). He was followed by classmate Eli Stiglitz (18:30.7), Rapid River sophomore Owen Truitt (18:37.1) and Superior Central freshman Jaxon Klyk (18:52.2).

Rapid River senior Jae Poma was 12th (19:08.5) and classmate Jon Denkins finished 14th (19:13).

"It was a tight race with St. Ignace and Mid Pen," Rockets' coach Zach Truitt said. "It came down to the last 10th of a mile. It all depended on who outkicked who. We had the most finishers in the top 15. We got three on the podium, but we really needed four to win it. We're losing four seniors who will be hard to replace."

The Marquette boys ran away with their eighth straight D-1 title with 19 points. They were followed by Sault Ste. Marie 79 and Houghton 84.

Marquette senior Lucas Ballard got a belated birthday present by earning his first U.P. title in 16:28.9.

"I felt really good through the whole run," Ballard said a day after turning 18. "It's a beautiful day and a great way to end the season. I'm pretty happy with my time. I did a lot of training. It's great to see my hard work pay off. This is a great birthday present."

He was followed by classmate Vasu Esplin (17:08.1) and junior teammate William Lindsay (17:23,8) and Sault sophomore Chase Aldrich (17:39.8).

"When you graduate six of your top seven runners, you can't expect anything," Sault coach Jim Martin said. "Houghton gave us a run for our money. The guys worked so hard for this. The girls ran well, too. I'm just happy for them. The kids have great attitudes. I can't complain at all."

Marquette's Charlotte Jones won in 19:42.

Gladstone senior Chuck Cameron was this area's leader in 11th (18:22.1).

"This is my first time medalling at state," he said. "It's amazing. I've been trying for this all through high school. It's a great feeling. I told myself I've been working toward this since third grade. This is a beautiful day for running."

The Marquette girls won for the fifth consecutive time with 49 points, followed by Houghton 55, Sault 67 and Negaunee 83.

Marquette freshman Charlotte Jones gained top honors at 19:42. She was followed by Kingsford junior Maria Murvich (20:02.8), Negaunee freshman Julia Plaxco (20:11.8), Houghton junior Holly Cooke (20:27.2) and Sault senior Asia Jones (20:29.7).

Gladstone junior Joselyn Mills was the area's top finisher in 19th (22:39.9).

In D-2, the Munising girls brought home a championship trophy for the first time in four years when they were in D-3.

The Mustangs scored 48 points, followed by last year's champion Rudyard 57 and Painesdale Jeffers 69.

Newberry senior Abby Taylor won at the Finals for the first time in 20:16.1, followed by sophomore teammate Molly McNamara (20:29.3) and Munising sophomore Emma Conklin (21:15.1).

The Rudyard boys edged Munising on a sixth-runner tie-breaker for the title. Both teams scored 42 points and Jeffers, which took it the past five years, was third this time with 50 points.

Ishpeming senior Kemper Gearhart took top honors at 17:48.2, followed by Rudyard senior Eli Folkersma (18:00.7) and Munising senior Blake Lakosky (18:10.1).
