GARDEN CORNERS -- The Rapid River Rockets improved to 5-8 on the season with a three-set victory over the Big Bay de Noc Black Bears here Tuesday.

Rapid River senior Donna McDonald led the way for the Rockets with 14 kills and Alivia Frappier had 23 assists.

The Rockets won the first set 25-18.

"It was a tough loss for us tonight," Black Bears coach Angie Carley said. "Rapid has really come a long way with their program, and their girls did a good job finding open spots on the court. I think the youth of our team showed tonight. We made some simple mistakes with coverage, passing, and finishing at the net and those things hurt us tonight."

Senior Madelyn Lindbert and sophomore Nevaeh Hernandez tied with 16 digs as the Rockets took the second set 26-24 in a wild thriller.

"Payton had some really nice serving runs tonight," Carley said. She's always a big part of what we do, and we are going to miss her next year."

Pederson finished with 12 kills to go along with six digs and four aces.

The Rockets won the third set 25-18.

"As a coach, I have really enjoyed watching Rapid's program grow," Carley said. "I really think they are going to be a team to watch over the next two seasons."

Rapid River will be back in action Thursday as they travel to Forest Park while Big Bay de Noc will return to action Saturday at the Northern Lights League Tournament at Superior Central.
