SPALDING -- All flights were grounded here Thursday night as the Ishpeming Hematites defeated the North Central Jets (25-15, 25-20, 25-15) in straight sets.

The Hematites used a pair of big service runs from junior Stella Nerlfi. The first was an eight-point service run in the first set that included a pair of aces that gave Ishpeming a 25-15 win in the first set. The second came in the third set as Nerlfi had a 10-point run that put Ishpeming up 15-5.

"My teammates really helped for sure, Nerlfi said. "It gave me the confidence to keep that serve run going. We work on a lot of serve and receive during practice and I think that helps a lot."

The Hematites were full speed from the first set til the end even when things got a little rocky in the third st.

"I learned that even when things don't go our way we can work hard to get the ball back on our side," Ishpeming coach Trisha Smith said. "I have a lot of respect for North Central. You can tell they are working hard. The setter did a good job of mixing things up and it's good to see programs getting built at the division four level."

The Jets did well in the second set as they started the set off with an ace by senior Mylie Luedtke and led 6-4 on an ace by Addysyn DeAngelo.

Ishpeming scored the next five points to take a 9-6 lead on a kill by Nora Jo Anderson. The Jets cut the deficit to two on three occasions but could not close the gap as they fell 25-20.

"We did some things good and some things not so good," Jets coach Rick Mick said. "What disappointed me the most was our energy level and energy is a big piece to this game."

North Central will return to action Tuesday as they travel to Carney-Nadeau.
