MARQUETTE -- The Kingsford Flivvers captured their fourth straight Great Northern Conference volleyball championship in a 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-15) triumph over the Marquette Sentinels here Thursday night.
This also marked the fourth consecutive time the Flivvers finished undefeated in the GNC.
"This is a very good accomplishment," Kingsford senior Mylee Kreider said. "We wanted to keep that undefeated streak going."
Marquette was within 18-13 following a passing error by the Flivvers in the third set.
Kingsford then got a side-out on a kill by junior Lakyn Wallis and sophomore Staysha Jarski added a kill to put the Flivvers up by eight points.
Marquette then committed back-to-back passing miscues and the Flivvers extended their lead to 24-13 on another kill by Jarski in their regular-season finale.
Back-to-back kills by senior Grace Filizetti shaved Marquette's deficit to 24-15 before the match ended on a service error.
"There was a little pressure coming into this match," Kingsford coach Jaclynn Kreider said. "We wanted to be four-time undefeated conference champions. The kids take a lot of pride in the work that we do."
After taking the first set, the Flivvers took a 4-3 lead on a kill by sophomore Mckynzee Kreider in the second.
Kingsford then committed three consecutive hitting miscues, enabling Marquette to take a 6-4 lead.
The score was knotted at nine before a kill by Wallis gave the Flivvers a sideout and a 10-9 lead.
Marquette was still within 13-10 followed by a hitting error by Kingsford.
Kingsford extended its lead to 16-10 on a kill by senior Mya Brunswick.
The Sentinels closed within 19-17 prior to committing a service error to put the Flivvers up by three points.
Kingsford hiked its advantage to 22-17 on a kill by Mylee Kreider and Mckynzee Kreider ended that set with a kill.
"Winning the GNC is a good starting point, knowing we have the potential to go far if we do our part," Mckynzee said.
The Flivvers, who are off next week, will find out who they play first in the Division 2 district next weekend.
Marquette concludes its regular season Thursday when it hosts Calumet Copper Island Academy.
"The girls played tough," Sentinels' coach Heather Concha said. "This was our last conference match. I thought we'd win the second set. Kingsford worked on a few things. They're very quick. Although, our girls held their own. It was a hard-fought match. We were trying to take out an opponent that hadn't lost in our conference."
