ST NICHOLAS -- Serving errors proved to be costly for the Mid Peninsula Wolverines here Tuesday night as the winless Engadine Eagles picked up their first win of the season (25-13, 22-25,25-18,25-19) in four sets.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 7-4 lead on a pair of kills by senior Hailee Schubert as well as a pair of aces by sophomore Sarah Chapman.
"It felt so good to get the win tonight," Chapman said. "We have all worked very hard for this and it feels amazing."
The Eagles were in control throughout the first set as Chapman delivered another pair of aces to extend the Eagles lead to 21-10. The Eagles went on to win the set 25-13.
The Wolverines battled back in the second set as they took an early 6-4 lead on three aces by freshman Gemma Loftquist who finished with seven on the night. The lead went back and forth with neither team being able to really get a long run established in the second set. The best was the Wolverines scoring eight of 11 points to tie the set at 18 one of five ties during the set.
"Our serve and receive killed us tonight," Wolverines coach Emily Kayser said. "We couldn't get under the ball and we could not get our momentum going and that hurt us a lot."
The Eagles took back control in the third set as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead with three aces by senior Cali Robinson during the seven-point serving run.
"The match was closer at points than I wanted it to be," Eagles coach Aubrey Galgoci said. "We were able to pull through and finish strong."
The Wolverines answered, scoring seven points of their own to tie the game at seven. The Wolverines took the lead at 12-10 on a pair of aces by eighth grader Gracianna Latvala but the lead was short-lived as the Eagles scored 11 of the next 12 points to take a 21-13 lead highlighted by a pair of kills by Robinson.
"I learned that when they are communicating well it brings our energy level up," Galgoci said. "Their hustle and drive was a big contributor to us getting the win tonight."
The fourth set was close early on but a six-point serving run by Chapman with a pair of aces put the Eagles up 19-11. The Eagles went on to take the set 25-19.
Engadine also won the JV match in two sets 25-19, 25-18.
The Wolverines return to action tonight as they travel to Carney-Nadeau.
