GARDEN CORNERS -- The Big Bay de Noc Black Bears captured the Northern Lights League regular-season volleyball championship by sweeping both ends of a doubleheader from the Paradise Rockets here Wednesday night.
They took the opener 25-4, 25-8 and nightcap 25-6, 25-13.
"This season truly has exceeded my expectations," Big Bay coach Angie Carley said. "We came into this season looking at it as a building year with how young and green our team was, and despite that, we walked away with a regular-season championship for the Northern Lights League.
Big Bay senior Payton Pederson served for 17 aces to go with eight kills and 16 digs. Emma Goldi collected eight aces and two digs. Ivy Gates finished with five aces, two kills, 10 assists and two digs and Kentlee Desjarden added three aces, five kills and five digs.
"It hasn't been easy," Carley said. "We definitely had our fair share of ups and downs, but with the help of Payton, our lone senior, we defied the odds and came out on top. Sure, we still have the CUP conference and games left, but this is a big deal for us. I can't begin to express how proud I am of them as their coach."
