CARNEY -- The Carney-Nadeau Wolves are making do with very young cross country teams this season.
Their boys' team includes six sophomores, one freshman and a seventh-grader. The girls are represented by a trio of eighth-graders.
Third-year sophomore Lane Mellen, who is the boys' pacesetter, placed fifth in the Kingsford Invitational at the Iron Mountain City Park Sept. 8.
The Wolves resume in the Stephenson Invitational on the Dale Fountain Memorial course at Banat Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. (CDT).
Other schools entered are Escanaba, Florence-Niagara, Wis., Crystal Falls Forest Park, Escanaba Holy Name, Marinette, Menominee, Norway, Powers North Central and Rock Mid Peninsula.
Additional hopefuls for the Wolves include sophomores Jaxson Kleiman, Lucian Linder, Shaw Salo and Colton DeGrave, freshman Brayden Kasbohm and seventh-grader Sam Eichhorn.
"These are the same guys we had last year," coach Paul Polfus said. "Their times seem to be better than last year. Lane is sort of our leader. He runs hard and does a nice job. We try to set goals as the year goes on."
Girls' hopefuls are Aubrey and Bailey Corrigan and Isabelle Everard.
"The girls also ran last year and play junior high basketball," Polfus said. "They work very hard. Considering the size of our school, I'm happy with our turnout. We try to build off that."
After Wednesday's meet, the Wolves travel to Munising for the El Harger Memorial Invitational at the Pictured Rocks Golf Course Sept. 23.
The Skyline Central Conference meet takes place Oct. 7 at Banat and the Upper Peninsula Division 3 Finals are set for Oct. 24 in Houghton.
