EBEN JUNCTION -- Edye Burdett may only be a freshman, but she has already achieved some important milestones as a cross country runner at Superior Central.
Not only did Burdett win the Superior Central Invitational here Saturday, she tied the course record which she now shares with Ewen-Trout Creek senior Bree Besonen.
Burdett covered the 3.1-mile course in a personal-best 21 minutes, 2.6 seconds and Besonen, who won here a year ago, was runner-up this time at 21:08.1.
"Overall, I'm happy with my running," she said. "The race on Wednesday (at Manistique) took a lot out of me. I'm not the best at running in the heat. We just had light practices the last two days. I want another one here. Next year, we're going for it. I'm still learning how to run a 5-K. I'm so happy to have the competition this year. I want to get to know Bree better and become friends with her."
Munising was crowned champion with 44 points, followed by E-TC 68, Superior Central 71 and Rapid River 72.
The Munising boys also won with 44 points. They were followed by Crystal Falls Forest Park 60, Engadine 82 and Rapid River 91.
Rock Mid Peninsula sophomore Ashdeyn Gerow earned top individual honors at 18:28.9. He was followed by Engadine junior Nate Stielstra (18:56.1) and Forest Park junior Hayden Smith (18:59.1).
"The sun was hot, but the shade was nice," Stielstra said. "I enjoyed this one. We just had a two-day break. I'm still getting back into racing. I wish I could have trained a little more this summer, but I had to miss some time. I'm happy with my time. I dropped 30 seconds from last year."
Mid Pen coach Carl Brunngraeber was pleased with the Wolverines' effort.
"Ashdeyn has been sick, but he still ran well," he said. "The day went really well for us. Cason (Brunngraeber) ran a PR (personal record) and Vivian (Norden) medalled. She's excited. The kids are doing everything I ask them to do."
Munising freshman Emma Conklin placed third among the girls in 21:14.7 and Rapid River sophomore Evonna LaCosse took fourth (22:01.7).
Escanaba sophomore Avah Akerly was eighth (23:24.3) and Superior Central junior Kendra Pederson placed ninth (23:31.4).
"I just wanted to go out hard and keep up with the top pack," Akerly said. "This isn't my best time. I ate too heavy this morning and didn't feel the greatest. Although, I like to run here. It's a nice course."
In the boys' race, Esky junior Kingston Berube took seventh (19:11.6), followed by Superior Central freshman Jaxon Klyk (19:31.4) and Rapid River senior Jae Poma (19:36.4).
