Sept. 6, 1966 -- Jim Sundalius captured the Gladstone Golf Club men's title, defeating last year's champ Pete Peterson 2-and-1. Sundalius clinched his first club championship by sinking a 45-foot putt on the 17th green. Gene Harris was the consolation winner in the championship flight and Joe Butch was the winner in the first flight.
Bill Eis, Jr. was crowned champion in Escanaba Country Club tournament with a 1-up victory in 19 holes over Harold VanEffen. Eis scored a par-5 while VanEffen had a bogey-6 on the extra hole.
The Holy Name Crusaders became the early leader in the Great Northern Conference with a 7-0 football triumph over the Iron Mountain Mountaineers while also presenting Tom O'Neil with his first coaching victory. Dave Cannon scored on a 10-yard run and Bob Bricco, who kicked the extra point, rushed for 106 yards on 24 carries.
The Gladstone Braves opened their season with a 20-0 victory over the Gwinn Modeltowners. Gary Larson ran 20 times for 134 yards and two touchdowns. Dan Gobert tossed a 30-yard pass to Jeff Orton for another score and Roy DeWitt tackled Pete Castro for a safety.
Sept. 10, 1966 -- Holy Name continued its early-season success with a 12-6 victory over the Kingsford Flivvers. Bricco again led the Crusaders in rushing with 63 yards on 15 carries in this GNC match-up. Cannon was 3-of-8 passing for 62 yards and two TDs.
Larson's three-yard touchdown run was just enough to lift Gladstone to a 6-0 victory at Newberry. The Indians, playing under their new lights for the first time, were on the Braves' one-yard line when the first half ended and on Gladstone's four at the end of the Great Lakes Conference contest.
Sept. 12, 1966 -- The Escanaba Eskymos fell to 0-2 with a 18-4 loss to the Menominee Maroons. Esky's John Mileski tackled Ray Gignac for a safety, set up on a punt which landed on the Maroons' two-yard line by Jim Boyle. The Eskymos added their second safety on a high snap from center. Bill Bellefeull led them in rushing with 62 yards on 14 carries.
Sept. 8, 1981 -- Bill Sigfred booted a 26-yard field goal and Mike Lee scored on a four-yard run as the Rapid River Rockets hung on for a 10-8 victory over the Engadine Eagles. Lee led the Rockets in rushing with 60 yards. Kirby McCarty added 55 and Bill Schram finished with 48.
Sara Kalishek drained a pair of free throws in the final 10 seconds, helping the Gladstone Braves post a 33-29 girls' basketball triumph over the West Iron County Wykons. Patti Trotter led the Braves with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Sept. 9, 1981 -- Jeanne Courneene tossed in 18 points as the Escanaba girls rolled past the Negaunee Miners 63-31. Sandy Davidson scored 15 and Michelle Hall and Shelly Livermore added 10 apiece. Lisa Murray led Esky in rebounding with 11. Livermore and Hall grabbed 10 boards each.
Seb Rubick's coaching debut was successful as the Manistique girls opened their basketball season with a 47-42 triumph over the Newberry Indians. Robin Welch led the Emeralds with 17 points and 13 rebounds.
