Sept. 13, 1966 -- The Hermansville Redskins opened their fall baseball season with a 6-5 victory over the Carney-Nadeau Wolves. Winning pitcher Doug LaCoursier scattered five hits, struck out eight and walked four. Randy Fochesato ripped a bases-loaded triple and a single and LaCoursier added two hits.
Sept. 14, 1966 -- Jack Smith fired a one-under-par 35 in the Highland Golf Club Men's Twilight League. Bob Monson, Al Davidson and Jerry Martin shot 37. They were followed by Dave Friets at 38 and Jim Schultz, Barney Barnhart, Len Knauf and Ed McCarthy finished with 39.
Sept. 17, 1966 -- The Gladstone Braves tasted defeat for the first time this season, dropping a 31-6 football decision to the Ishpeming Hematites. Gary Larson scored their lone touchdown on a two-yard run.
Manistique's comeback fell a little short in a 23-18 loss to the Munising Mustangs. The Emeralds, who trailed 23-0 scored three quick TDs in the fourth quarter. Bob Cowman tossed a 15-yard pass to Gary Sample for Manistique's first score. Dave Barton dashed 63 yards for the Emeralds' second TD and Don McCurdy added a three-yard TD run.
Sept. 19, 1966 -- The Holy Name Crusaders picked up their third straight victory in a 38-0 conquest of the Stephenson Eagles. Holy Name's defense limited the Eagles to 24 yards in total offense. Joe Young ran for two TDs, including a 62-yard dash. Dave Cannon tossed a 30-yard aerial to Bob Bricco for the third score. Bob Gorenchan added a 14-yard TD run and Dave Buckland threw for a pair of TDs.
Sept. 14, 1981 -- Joe Gaudette scored twice, leading Rock Mid Peninsula to a 14-0 victory over the Big Bay de Noc Black Bears. Gaudette got his first touchdown on a 33-yard pass on a halfback option from Mark Royer and added his second score on a one-yard run. Royer led the Wolverines in rushing with 73 yards and Big Bay quarterback Mike Poupore hit 6-of-13 passes.
Sept. 16, 1981 -- The Escanaba girls overcame a cold shooting night from the free throw line to post a 67-59 basketball victory over Marquette. The Eskymos, who hit just 5-of-19 gifters, got 23 points and 16 rebounds from Sandy Davison. Jeanne Courneene added 14 points and Shelly Livermore scored 10.
Patti Trotter scored 24 points, leading the Gladstone Braves past the Manistique Emeralds 43-35. Robin Welch paced the Emeralds with 19 points and Beth Nelson hit 12.
Junior Ray Cartwright earned his first varsity victory, helping the Gladstone boys post a 16-46 cross country victory over the Escanaba Eskymos in a dual meet at Ludington Park. Cartwright, who was clocked at 16:04, was followed by teammates George Nebel, Joe Wolfe and Pete Dollhopf and Esky's Ken Eubank.
The Gladstone girls also won 23-34, led by Shari Ahola's first-place finish in 19:59. Esky's Annette Rontu and Debbie Barnhart grabbed the next two places and Gladstone's Sherri LaCarte, Sue Griswold, Tina Louis and Candy Miron took the next four spots.
Sept. 18, 1981 -- Pam Michael scored 18 points and Sharon Thompson added 16 as the Trenary Comets broke into the win column for the first time this season in a 48-43 triumph over the Big Bay de Noc Black Bears. Patti Groleau paced the Black Bears with 21 points and Evie Dalgord had 10.
Sept. 19, 1981 -- The Escanaba Eskymos stayed unbeaten in three games this season, earning a 17-0 football triumph over the Okemos Chieftans. Mike Lawson scored on a 15-yard pass from Dean Altobelli. Kevin Tapani scored on a QB sneak and Dick Olsen added a 28-yard field goal.
