Aug. 31, 1966 -- Dave Andrews fired a one-under-par 35 and Harry Hogan hit 36 to set the individual pace in the Escanaba Country Club Men's Twilight League. Elmer Swanson shot 38 and Don Goulais had 39.
Jack Smith and Dave Friets shot two-under-par 34 to lead the way in the Highland Golf Club Men's League. They were followed by Mel Manske at 35, Jerry Martin 36, Val Smith 38 and Al Davidson, Bob Olson, Barney Barnhart and Bob Monson 39.
Sept. 1, 1966 -- Rosemary LeMire was the leader in the ECC Women's League at 43. Lou Berglund and Milly Boyce shot 45, followed by Sally Fontaine and Marilyn Knoll 46, Doris Swanson 47 and Gloria Hansley 48.
Sept. 3, 1966 -- The Escanaba Eskymos came up short in their football opener, dropping a 26-7 decision at Antigo, Wis. Esky quarterback Jim Boyle threw for 178 yards, including a 69-yard touchdown pass to Paul Miller.
The Manistique Emeralds also dropped their opener 53-6 to the Ishpeming Hematites. Manistique's Don McCurdy ran five times for 76 yards, including a 69-yard TD.
Aug. 31, 1981 -- Jim Larsen of Escanaba and Joe Johnson of Menominee placed 10th and Jim Groos and Ray Payment took 12th in the men's cruising class in the U.S. National Canoe Championships at Lafayette, Ind. Kathy and Lara Palzewic took sixth in women's cruising and Bud Moll and Jed Platzke of Bruce Crossing won the men's standard hull class.
Sept. 2, 1981 -- Lori Morley scored 11 points, but it wasn't nearly enough to prevent the Gladstone Braves from dropping an 83-47 season-opening basketball decision to Marquette. Patti Trotter added 10 points and 13 rebounds and Lori Schwemin paced Marquette with 26 points.
Sept. 4, 1981 -- The Bark River-Harris girls opened with 33-23 triumph over Crystal Falls Forest Park. Joyce Derocher led the Broncos with 13 points and Janice Pokladowski had 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Sept. 5, 1981 -- The Escanaba Eskymos overwhelmed the Gladstone Braves 41-0 in a season-opening football game. Kevin Tapani hit 2-of-3 passes for 55 yards and two touchdowns and Dean Altobelli was 3-of-4 passing for 46 yards and a TD. Jerry Rudden ran for 77 yards. Jim Zimmer added 65 on the ground and Mike Lawson grabbed two passes for TDs.
