HANNAHVILLE -- The Hannahville Soaring Eagles reaped the benefits of a stingy defense in a 3-0 soccer victory over the Munising Baptist Bobcats here Monday.
Hannahville packed it in down low, often forcing the Bobcats to take shots from outside.
Goaltender Antonio Eagle also helped their cause by stopping 17 shots.
"He had some nice saves," Hannahville coach Dan Kleikamp said. "Our defense has been playing real well. I'll give them a lot of credit. They had a handful of shots we thought would get in."
Devin Arteaga scored Hannahville's first goal from point-blank range.
Dawson Lea hit the second goal on a breakaway 22 minutes into the second half and M.J. Smith provided the Soaring Eagles with an insurance goal on a breakaway.
"Their numbers definitely helped," Bobcats' coach Hunter MacArthur said. "They have nearly a full team on the bench and we have three subs and they're young. Their third goal was a perfect set up. We were sloppy with the ball in the first half. At halftime, I got after them for a lack of effort. The second half was better."
The Bobcats appeared to be more aggressive at the beginning of the second half, but the Soaring Eagles proved to be equal to the task.
They were able to put a lot of pressure on junior goaltender Ethan Swift, two-time Most Valuable Player in the NLC.
"Their goaltender is quick," Kleikamp said. "He also had some nice saves. I'm proud of the way we played today."
The Soaring Eagles, who improved to 5-1 overall and league, host the Bayside Soccer Club jayvees today at 4:30 and Bay Mills Ojibwe Charter Friday.
Munising Baptist hosts the Bayside jayvees Monday and Hannahville Tuesday.
