Norse take down Firebirds to win 8 of last 9 matches

ESCANABA -- The Bay College volleyball team has now won eight of their last nine matches as they defeated Kirtland Community College (25-17, 25-19, 22-25, 25-16) in four sets here Wednesday.
The Norse were led by a pair of sophomores Lydia Schaal who had 12 kills on the night and Ava Maki who had 10.
"Lydia has been playing very well this season," Norse coach Dan Porath said. "When we are on offensively we are really tough because defensively we are as good as anybody."
The Norse jumped out to an early 9-2 lead on a kill by Maki who had three in the first set.
Freshman Dakota Bridges had an ace to put the Norse up 12-6. Bridges finished the night with three aces and a pair of kills.
The Norse extended their lead to 19-12 on an ace by Jazmine Jasenovsky who finished with four aces on the night.
The Second set had the Norse jump out to an early 3-0 lead before Kirtland freshman Makenzie Jones served an ace to tie the game at three. The Firebirds got their first lead of the game at 4-3 but that lead was short-lived as the Norse scored the next four points highlighted by an ace from Ava Johnson to put the Norse up 7-4.
The Firebirds took the lead again at 10-9 on a kill by freshman Kerstyn Howard. But the Norse regained the lead at 13-12 and would not trail again in the second set taking it 25-19.
After dropping the third set 25-22 the Norse came back with a lot of energy in the fourth set as the Norse jumped out to a 9-3 lead on a kill by Maki.
"We were on fire tonight," Maki said. "We have to stay locked in and motivated for our game with Montcalm on Monday but the third set taught us tonight that we won't win close games if we are missing serves."
The Norse extended the lead to 19-11 on a kill by Schaal that led to the Norse scoring seven of the next 12 points to take the set 25-16.
"Our defense really helped us tonight," Schaal said. "Everyone did a great job overall and I couldn't have done that without my team."
The Norse will be back in action Monday as they host Montcalm Community College.
