FLAT ROCK -- Kingsford senior Maria Murvich reached an important milestone here Saturday as she held off Superior Central freshman Edye Burdett for top individual honors in the Bay College High School Invitational cross county meet.
Murvich broke the 20-minute barrier for the first time, covering the 3.1-mile course in 19:53.8 on this sunny and warm day.
"It's like a weight being lifted off my shoulders," she said. "I finally got it. I really wanted to break 20. It's very important for me to get it done. Edye's a tough runner. I didn't feel the best at the start."
Munising was crowned champion with 41 points and Rapid River edged Marinette 75-78 for runner-up honors.
Burdett was clocked at 20:06.9 and Munising freshman Emma Conklin placed third in 20:54.8.
"I'm getting close to the 19s," Burdett said. "My goal for this meet was to stick with Maria the best I could. I'm proud of my time. Maria is a smart runner. When you stick with her, you're going to get faster. I appreciate all the people who were here to cheer us on. Hopefully next week I'll be able to break 20."
The Munising boys edged Gladstone 82-86 for the title. Third-place Ishpeming Westwood scored 98 points.
"It was a good day," Munising coach Bob Wing said. "The boys were missing their No. 1 runner and the girls were without their No. 3 and 5 runners. I'm happy with the way the kids stepped up. Dylan Krause got a PR (personal record) by a minute. Everybody's pushing each other. The kids are doing well, but we need some people to heal up."
Westwood sophomore Calvin Carlson topped the field at 18:00.5. He was followed by Menominee freshman Bradley Klann (18:26) and Crystal Falls Forest Park junior Hayden Smith (18:35).
"We ran in a tough meet at Ishpeming Thursday," Carlson said. "I felt a little tired today. I was just trying to get out front and stay out front."
Gladstone senior Chuck Cameron placed fourth (18:50.6) followed by Munising freshman Evan Kelto (18:50.9) and Escanaba junior Kingston Berube (18:51.1).
"Munising has a strong program," Gladstone coach Gary Whitmer said. "They beat us today. We had a couple personal bests, but had two guys who were struggling. Chuck ran a good time and Charlie had a PR by seven seconds (19:07.8). Joselyn Mills had a nice race. She placed 10th today and broke 22 minutes at Holly."
Menominee senior Winley Brandt took fourth among the girls (21:27.9).
"This is my favorite course," she said. "I struggled a little in the first mile. It was a nice temperature. It was warm, especially in the field. I thought it was going to be cloudy. This is a challenging course. It's very uneven which makes for tricky footing."
Rapid River sophomore Evonna LaCosse placed fifth (21:45.9) and Esky sophomore Avah Akerly took eighth (22:59).
"I'm very happy with my race," LaCosse said. "It was hot out there, but I tried not to think about it."
Coach Scott Dykema said it was a day of ups and downs for the Esky.
"Kingston ran strong," he added. "The kids did great. We have some guys who also play soccer. A lot of guys haven't experienced this level of running. We need to get healthy."
Esky is hosting the Great Eskymos Chase at the Escanaba Country Club Thursday.
