HANNAHVILLE -- A vastly improved Hannahville volleyball team enjoyed a big serving night here Monday in a 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-8) triumph over the Munising Baptist Bobcats.
McKenzie Mathias set the tone early with a five-point service run, helping the Soaring Eagles grab a 6-0 lead in the first set of this Northern Lights League match.
A service error by the Bobcats, enabled Hannaville to stretch its lead to 11-3.
Munising Baptist then trimmed its deficit to 11-6 on a four-hit violation by Hannahville.
The Soaring Eagles, however, extended their lead to 18-8 on back-to-back service aces by Raelynn Teeple.
Hannahville led 21-10 following a net violation by the Bobcats.
Mathias then served for three consecutive aces, giving the Soaring Eagles an insurmountable 24-10 advantage.
"We were a little inconsistent with our serving on Beaver Island, but we were consistent tonight," Hannahville coach Breanne Massey said. "Raelynn is a second-year player and I'm very impressed with how she plays. She's a big asset to our team."
The Soaring Eagles continued to serve strong in the second set, building a 13-3 cushion behind a five-point run by Makhia Foster.
Hannahville then committed multiple errors, including a defensive miscue which enabled the Bobcats to get within 13-10.
Munising Baptist was still within 15-11 after a serving miscue.
Hannahville then got a sideout on a service miscue and Mercedes Meshigaud followed with four aces during a six-point run, increasing its advantage to 22-11.
The Bobcats shaved their deficit to 24-16 on a kill by seventh-grader Lydia Cross before the Soaring Eagles sealed that set.
In the third set, the Bobcats were within 4-3 following an ace by junior Atley Maxon.
A kill by Teeple provided Hannahville with a sideout and 5-4 lead and Shondreya Shawano-Frye began an eight-point run to put the Soaring Eagles up 13-4.
Hannahville's lead then reached 15-5 before Munising Baptist got a sideout on a kill by Maxon.
Grayce Williams pushed the ball over the net for a kill and a 16-6 advantage for the Soaring Eagles.
Teeple then served for five points, including three aces, giving the Soaring Eagles an insurmountable 21-6 cushion.
"They're a strong serving team," Bobcats' coach Alissa MacArthur said. "Although, our serve receives were off tonight. Our volleys are coming along. We just want the girls to do the best they can. This is a major learning experience for the girls. We're such a young team. It's just a matter of learning how to communicate."
Hannahville, which improved to 4-2, travels to Kinross Maplewood Baptist for a doubleheader Thursday and hosts Bay Mills Ojibwe Charter Friday.
"I felt our plays were safe and smart," Massey said. "It was really cool to see the girls be smart with the ball. We're really off to a good start. I'm excited for our girls."
Munising Baptist, which visited Big Bay de Noc Tuesday, hosts Hannahville Sept. 22.
