ESCANABA -- It was a tight race for top honors in the men's race during the Escanaba Fall Classic five-kilometer run here Saturday.
Ethan Vavrick of Marquette won the 3.1-mile event in 18 minutes, 36.5 seconds, followed by Josh March of Iron Mountain at 18:41.1 and L.J. Caron of Cornell (18:54.1) on this sunny and seasonably-cool morning.
"I just got back into running this year," Vavrick said. "I ran my first marathon in Marquette and getting back into speedwork. Having run the marathon really helped me keep a faster pace. The guy behind me (March) was ahead of me for a while."
Hannah Roster of Buckley, Mich. became the women's champion at 21:45.1. She was followed by Mallory Nelsen of Gladstone (21:59.7) and Kate Queen of Crystal Falls (23:05.3).
"I've run marathons and half-marathons, but wanted to do some speedwork today," Roster said. "I think my conditioning helped a lot. We had ideal conditions. It was comfortable running. The second-place runner stuck with me for half of it, then I was able to break away a little."
The half-marathon was cancelled this time due to construction on the city's streets.
Ninety-six runners showed up for the 5-K.
