ESCANABA -- After a long Labor Day weekend the Escanaba girls tennis team was back on the court for a matchup with West Iron County. The Eskymos shut out the Wykons winning 8-0 but also included a trio of three-set matches all coming in singles action.
The marquee match of the day came at No. 1 singles senior Anna Martin dropped the first set against West Iron County's Grace Smith 7-5 but bounced back winning the second set 6-1 and the third set 6-0.
"Anna didn't get down on herself at all," Eskymos coach Chris Ogren said. "Anna came out in the second set and continued to play really smart tennis. Her approach shots were deep, her net play was clean, and she remained patient from the baseline."
The win for Martin was one of the biggest wins of her high school career. Martin and Smith are two of the top five players in the U.P. and this was their first meeting of the year and it shows how evenly matched the two girls are.
At No. 3 singles Varrah Veeser took on Ashlynn Nichols. Veeser dropped the first set 6-1 but overcame it as she took the second set 7-5 and also held on for a 6-4 win in the third set.
"Varrah was able to get used to the wind and did a great job driving the ball through the court," Ogren said. "Varrah was hoping for an abbreviated third set, since she had already been playing for quite a while. Despite not wanting to play the third set, she embraced it and played her best tennis of the day and ended up closing out the match."
At No. 2 singles Olivia Vogel defeated West Iron's Haleigh LeMay in three sets winning the first set 6-2.
"Liv got off to a fast start and was up 3-0 early," Ogren said. "Things slowed down from the re but she still came away with the first set.
Vogel dropped the second set 6-2 before coming back to win the third set 6-4.
"After splitting the first two sets, Live made adjustments to her game," Ogren said. "She started swinging through the ball more to drive it deep in the court and it paid dividends in the end as she took the third set."
The Eskymos will be back in action on Saturday as they play in the Kingsford Invitational Tournament at 10a.m. Eastern Time.
