Centurions hold of Norse in volleyball action

ESCANABA -- The match went the distance here Monday night as Montcalm Community College picked up the win (29-27,19-25,19-25,25-23,15-12) in a Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) conference matchup.
The Centurions gained control of the match in the fourth set after the Norse took a 17-8 lead early but Montcalm answered scoring 11 of the next 12 points including a six-point serving run by freshman Ayanna Sanders who also led the team with five kills to go along with two blocks and one ace to put Montcalm up 19-18.
The Norse used a pair of aces by freshman Jazmine Jasenovsky to put the Norse back in the lead 21-19 but the Centurions scored six of the next eight points to take the set.
"We relaxed a little too much and gave them the momentum," Norse coach Dan Porath said. "They were able to take it into the fifth set and we could not recover."
The Centurions led 6-2 early in the fifth set as sophomore Erin Borek delivered a pair of aces.
The Norse battled back to take the lead in the fifth set at 12-11 but Montcalm answered, scoring the last four points including a three-point serving run by Borek.
"They are a good team," Porath said. "We didn't have our A game today and they play a style of volleyball similar to ours and I think it’s the first time this year where we lost on the energy points."
The Norse came out strong in the first set taking an early 7-1 lead on a block and a kill by sophomore Lydia Schaal. The Centurions scored nine of the next 12 points to tie the set at 10.
The Centurions took their first lead at 13-12 on an ace by sophomore Jocee Pleune and then extended the lead to 20-15 on a kill by Sanders.
The Norse came back with a five-point serving run with an ace by Audrey Franz to put the Norse up 21-20. The lead went back and forth before Montcalm closed out the first set 29-27.
The second set went back and forth with Bay taking a five point lead at 18-13 on an ace by Franz who had two aces on the night.
The largest lead for the Norse was seven points at 24-17 as Bay scored six out of seven points with a pair of kills by Ava Johnson who finished with 12 on the night.
The Centurions jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the third set. The Norse answered, scoring nine of the next 12 points to cut the deficit to 13-12 on a kill by Johnson. Freshman Josie Mechling had four of her 12 kills on the night during the third set which the Norse won 25-19.
Bay College will be back in action tonight as they travel to Gogebic Community College.
