Black Bears defeat Eagles in volleyball action

GARDEN CORNERS -- The Big Bay de Noc volleyball team executed on all levels as the walloped The Ojibwe Charter Eagles 25-3, 25-18, 25-9 in three sets here Tuesday night.
The Black Bears ran away with the first set as they jumped out to a 16-0 lead on a 15-point serving run by freshman Ivy Gates including nine aces in the set with eight of them coming on consecutive serves.
"We have been having some really good serving nights," Gates said. "We have spent a lot of time working on them and it has paid off for us."
The Black Bears went on to take the first set 25-3. Freshman Kentlee DesJarden had three aces in the first set with the third one putting the Black Bears up 24-2.
In the second set the Black Bears jumped out to an early 12-1 lead with six aces and a kill by senior Payton Pederson who had 12 aces on the night.
"We knew they were beatable based on who they had played," Pederson said. "We came in wanting to go fast and quick and it worked for us."
The Eagles were able to cut the deficit to 19-15 but could not close the gap as the Black Bears pulled away.
The third set was all Black Bears as they scored 11 of the last 13 points to take the set 25-9.
"The first set really gave us the momentum to get into the game," Black Bears coach Angie Carley said. "It also allowed us to get playing time for everyone and especially on Parent's Night that is a good thing.
The Black Bears will be back on the court Monday for a Tri-Meet with Maplewood Baptist and Ojibwe Charter at Maplewood.
