August 10, 1966 -- Barney Barnhart and Jack Smith led the way in the Highland Golf Club Men's Twilight League by shooting 37. They were led by Bob Monson, Bob Boucher and Dave Friets with 38 and Dave Friets, Bob Heyman and Mel Manske at 39.
August 11, 1966 -- Mike Jensen sank his first hole-in-one at the Escanaba Country Club. Jensen, who has been playing golf for 40 years, achieved that by using a five-iron on the 122-yard No. 13 hole.
Bill Eis, Jr. fired a two-under-par 34 in the ECC Men's Twilight League. He was followed by Dave Erickson 37, Elmer Swanson 38 and Bill Eis, Sr. and Fran Boyce 39.
August 12, 1966 -- The Teamsters captured the Class C men's district softball title by romping past the Michigan Hotel 15-4. Lowell LaPlant slammed a two-run homer in the fourth for the Teamsters, who scored 13 runs on 12 hits in the inning. Dennis Victorson and Tom Payment also rapped homers in the fourth and the game ended on Jim Barrett's two-run double in the sixth.
August 13, 1966 -- The Escanaba Cubs rallied for three runs in the ninth inning in a 7-6 upset victory over Adrian in the opening round of the American Legion state baseball tournament. Tom Brawley's two-run double provided the Cubs with the game-winner. Rick Kuchenberg led Esky with three hits. Ed Gauthier and Brawley finished with two apiece.
August 15, 1966 -- The Cubs then reached the semifinals where they bowed to Hamtramck 7-0. Esky finished with nine hits, led by Larry Anderson who went 3-for-3.
Rapid River Bill's Bar captured the Upper Peninsula Class D softball crown in a 12-0 conquest of Iron River Bosch Beer. Fran Lancour fired a no-hitter and Poly Viau was selected the tournament's Outstanding Player.
August 10, 1981 -- Rock Big Al's Corner Bar scored twice in the seventh inning, squeezing past Don's Bar 10-9 and taking over first place in the American League Slowpitch Softball League's Hiawatha Division. Ed Wadeen drove in the game-winner and Rich Ahlgren ripped a home run and triple. Ahlgren, Ed and Steve Wadeen, Scott Lusardi and Rick Peltonen had two hits each. Joel Belanger, Tom Mathe and Jim Tirschel paced Don's with three hits apiece.
August 12, 1981 -- The Gladstone Jaycee Little League All-Stars got eliminated from the state baseball tournament, dropping a 5-3 decision to Grand Rapids Pinery Park. Craig Ness brought Gladstone within the final margin with a two-run homer in the sixth frame and Jim Beauchamp scored on a single by Wes Butch in the first.
August 14, 1981 -- Jackie Villemure was crowned Indian Lake Golf Country Club women's tournament champion for the third straight year. This marked the fifth title overall for Villemure, who finished with 95 strokes. Ann Stevens was runner-up at 98.
Nancy Mantel earned earned the women's title at the Bluff, defeating Marion Tibergian in the championship match. Sally Fontaine placed third and Kathy Aartila placed fourth.
