August 6, 1966 -- The tournament trail ended for the Manistique Little League All-Stars as they dropped a 13-2 baseball decision to Madison, Wis. West. Kim Hartman and Jerry Sample got singles and scored Manistique's runs on a two-out double by Doug Erickson.
August 8, 1966 -- Nineteen-year-old Bill Smith of Sault Ste. Marie became the youngest player to win the Upper Peninsula Men's Golf tournament, edging Ken Hruska of Marquette in a playoff hole at the Escanaba Country Club. The two leaders finished with 296 strokes in the four-day event, followed by Dave Freits of Esky at 297 and Jack Smith of Highland with 298.
Roy Atkinson of Sault captured the U.P. trap shooting title, hitting 99-of-100 targets at the Delta County Sportsman’s Club. He teamed with Bill Ranta, who knocked down 96 for a combined score of 195. Iron Mountain won the five-man team event with 468.
Bob Iverson of Escanaba became a double-winner in the stock car races at the U.P. State Fairgrounds track, taking the checkered flag in modified feature and a heat event. Don Benoit was also a double-winner with victories in the first heat and semifinal in stock.
Tom Warren prevailed in the stock feature, followed by Jim Barron and Duke Gardiner of Esky and Richard Sain of Ramsay.
August 3, 1981 -- The Gladstone Jaycees Little League All-Stars retained their Upper Peninsula baseball title with a 5-2 victory over Ontonagon Lake of the Clouds. Kelly Dementer tossed a three-hitter and Brian Pelon, Wes Butch, Jim Beauchamp, Craig Ness, Chad Vitito and Ron Robinson were Gladstone's offensive leaders.
August 5, 1981 -- Jerry Wiles fired a three-under-par 68 to lead the way in the Highland Golf Club Men's League. Mark Gauthier shot 72, followed by Paul Zeleznik and Bill Carlson at 73.
Marien Tibergian led the Bluff Ladies' Day League with 84, She was followed by Nancy Mantel 87 and Sally Fontaine 97.
August 6, 1981 -- The Gladstone Jaycees Little League All-Stars continued to roll as they blanked Alpena Huron Shores 10-0 in a sectional game. Pelon tossed a three-hitter while pitching his fourth straight shut-out. He also fanned 11 and walked two and led the winners at the plate with two hits, including a two-run single in the fourth inning.
