Rapid River football holds midnight practice

RAPID RIVER -- As the clock struck midnight Monday morning the Rapid River Rockets took the field for the first time in preparation for the 2026 football season.
The players took in the moment as the season starts in just over two weeks. The Rockets come into this season after going 4-5 last year and just missing the playoffs. Seniors Joseph Thorbahn, Lane Olson and Rowen Flath anchor a group of skill position players looking to take the next step.
"This felt kind of weird walking onto the field with the lights on early in the morning," Thorbahn said. "This is our first last practice as we look to improve on last year and get to the playoffs.
This was the first time in almost a decade since the Rockets held a midnight practice.
"My excitement level is hitting about 120 right now, ” Rockets coach Joe Smith said. "We made a couple moves this season moving Rowen Flath to full back and from what I have seen so far I think he will fit in there very well."
