Broncos trample Maroons in volleyball action

HARRIS -- The Bark River-Harris Broncos started their season off on a high note as they defeated the Menominee Maroons in four sets 25-15, 21-25, 25-14, 25-19 here Tuesday.
The Broncos jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the first set highlighted by a pair of aces and a kill by junior Tessa LeFave.
The Maroons tied the game at four then took the lead at 5-b before the Broncos tied it at five and went on a six-point serving run including an ace by senior Alexis Olson to put the Broncos up 11-5.
The Maroons cut the deficit to 11-9 on back-to-back aces by senior Piper Ayers as part of a three-point scoring run. The Broncos responded scoring 12 of the 15 points to take a 23-13 lead and went on to win the first set.
"This year's motto has been point for point," Broncos coach Brooke Bartley said. "We knew we weren't going to have any huge, huge hitters. We are undersized and we knew that going in we are really DS heavy. We have like five or six defensive specialists and they do a great job of flying around the court."
The second set went back and forth as the match was tied on 12 occasions before the Maroons went on a four-point service run including an ace by senior Jada Johnson to take the second set.
In the third set, the Broncos jumped out to an early 6-2 lead and extended the lead to 10-3 on a kill by junior Skylar Brayak.
The Broncos led 18-12 as they claimed the third set scoring seven of the last nine points.
The Broncos took an 8-2 lead to start the fourth set on an ace by Olson who later had a kill and the Broncos led 16-9. The Maroons scored seven of the next ten points to cut the deficit to 19-16.
The Broncos extended their lead to 23-17 on a kill by senior Mira Johnson.
"We put in a lot of work in the offseason and it has paid off," Johnson said. "Menominee is always our first game of the season and I really feel like we were clicking tonight."
The Broncos went on to take the set 25-19 and in JV action the Broncos defeated Menominee 25-8, 20-25, 15-12; in three sets. Lillian St. Cyr had an 11-point service run in the first set to push the Broncos to victory.
"She was serving bullets out there tonight," Broncos JV coach Michelle DeGrave said. "Her serves got the rest of the team going and for us to get this win really helps our team a lot."
The Broncos will be back in action tonight as they host Norway.
