GARDEN CORNERS -- The Big Bay de Noc Black Bears made it a clean sweep this weekend, posting a pair of volleyball and soccer victories over the Mackinac Island Lakers.
Big Bay's volleyball team defeated the Lakers 3-1 (21-25, 26-24, 25-19, 25-23) Friday night and 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-16) Saturday morning.
"Volleyball was definitely a learning curve for us this weekend as we have a very young, green team after losing a lot of our returners," Big Bay coach Angie Carley said. "We had to start in a lot of different positions, but I am so proud of how hard this group of girls has worked and the effort they gave."
In soccer, the Black Bears won 6-1 Friday and 2-1 Saturday.
"Our team played hard and gritty this weekend," said Black Bears' soccer coach Alex Ranguette. "It's never easy playing a back-to-back match, so I couldn't be happier with the two wins. Friday was outstanding in goal and Parker (Pederson) up front took control. We have a fun team this year and want to keep it going."
Pederson scored the first four goals and Tanner Peterson and Trevor Noble added one apiece in Friday's match. Pederson and Eli Cooper scored in Saturday’s contest.
Goaltender Finley Morris stopped 25 shots in the two Northern Lights League matches.
