July 19, 1966 -- Bero Motors gained sole possession of first place in the Escanaba American League, posting a 14-3 softball victory over Mead. The winners collected 17 hits, including four by Ben Yagodzinski and Bill Rodman cracked a three-run homer. Bob Severinson had two hit for Mead.
July 20, 1966 -- Dennis Lueneburg fired a two-hitter, struck out six and walked one as Kiwanis blanked Mead 10-0 in the Escanaba Babe Ruth League. Greg Johnson rapped a two-run homer for Kiwanis which moved into first place.
July 25, 1966 -- Jerry Sample scattered five hits as the Manistique Little League All-Stars captured the area tournament title in a 5-3 baseball triumph over Marquette. Manistique, which trailed 3-1 after the first inning, gained the upper hand on a bases-loaded double by Ken Hartman in the second. Hartman then scored on a double by Doug Erickson.
Dorothy Coulter of Gladstone earned medalist honors in the Nahma Open Women's golf tournament with 90 strokes. Marie Eather of Prairie de Chien, Wis. was runner-up at 95 and Sally Fontaine of Escanaba and Kate LaBrasseur of Manistique shared third place with 96.
The Manistique Chiefs scored five times in the seventh innings as they rallied past Powers-Spalding in the opening round of the American Legion district baseball tournament. Bob Mastie, Doug Benson and Dave Smith led the Chiefs with two hits apiece.
July 20, 1981 -- Steve Bratonia sank a 22-foot putt in a playoff hole, edging Jerry Wiles for medalist honors in the Nahma Open golf tournament. Each ended regulation with 74 strokes. Martin Porath of Bark River and Jerry Zebre of Flint tied for third at 75. They were followed by Jim Dufresne and Tom Porath with 77.
July 21, 1981 -- Tom Green's two-run triple with two out in the seventh inning made the difference as Wolverine Sporting Goods squeezed past Bay City Beltline Bar 6-5 for the title in the Curtis Open Class slowpitch softball tournament. Doug Howard, who finished 3-for-3, was named the tourney's Most Valuable Player and Paul Manske was selected the most valuable infielder and home run king.
Don Johnson, Chet Faram and Dave Lahtinen shot 38 to lead the way in the Escanaba Country Club Men's Twilight League. Bill Corriveau, Larry Smith, John LeMire, Glen Pearson and Ken Myllyla hit 39.
July 24, 1981 -- Rich Hubert scattered five hits, leading the Gladstone Senior Little League All-Stars to a 1-0 baseball victory over Marquette for the Upper Peninsula title. Hubert also scored the only run on bunts by Al Marenger and Tom Thibault.
July 25, 1981 -- Brian Pelon fired a no-hitter as the Gladstone Little League All-Stars blanked Manistique 12-0 in a District 10 opener. Jim Beauchamp, Craig Ness and Chad Vitito were the offensive leaders with a double and single apiece.
Scott Hebert tossed a three-hitter, leading Escanaba to a 2-0 triumph over Marquette. Dan Aiken scored the first run on a single by Chris Bruce in the opening frame and Scott Hanson, who had two hits, gave Esky its second run on an error in the second.
