Gladstone Indians split with Marquette Reds

GLADSTONE — The Gladstone Indians 17U team split a pair of games with the Marquette Reds here Wednesday as they took the first game 7-6 and lost the second game 4-0.
The Indians got on the board in the first inning of game one as Braxton Breitenbach grounded out to the third baseman to score a run and The Indians added to the lead in the second inning as Brayden Lancour scored on an RBI-single by Charlie Savard to put the Indians up 2-0.
The Indians added three more in the third inning as Cole Watchhorn hit an RBI-single to score a run and Oren Dewitt also had a single that produced a run. The Indians led 5-0 after three innings/
“I got a little down after the first at bat when I struck out,” Watchorn said. “I had to battle back and got it down the right field line and got a run and just play the best game that I could.
The Indians allowed Marquette only two base runners over the first five innings as Breitenbach pitched a gem through the first three innings and a diving catch in the outfield in the third inning by Owen Kusiner kept the shutout intact through three innings.
“It was nice to get that one,” Kusiner said. “The ball hangs a lot on this field and I was able to make a play.”
Marquette put up two runs in the bottom of the fourth with one of them coming on a passed ball and the other off a sacrifice fly by Preston Cromell.
Marquette added four runs in the fifth inning as Cromell singled to bring in a run and Noah Watcher also had a run-producing single.
Breitenbach still came away with the win after allowing zero runs on zero hits in the first three innings with four strikeouts. He allowed six runs on six hits in the next two innings with only one strikeout.
In the second game, Ty Goodwin got Marquette on the board in the second inning and Marquette added another run in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. Cromell earned the win for the Reds allowing zero runs on three hits with one strikeout and one walk. Cromwell went the complete game with only 53 pitches.
