Rapid River boys victorious at North Dickinson Booster Club Invite

FELCH — Rapid River’s boys were in the title hunt for their first two track and field meets this season, finishing runner-up to Escanaba and then Gladstone.

The third time proved to be the charm as the Rockets ran away with the title in the North Dickinson Booster Club Invitational here on this chilly and rainy Wednesday.

Rapid River scored 161½ points, followed by Norway 84 and Stephenson 73½.

“We’re a fairly young team, but the conditions were the same for everybody,” Rockets’ coach Steve Ostrenga said. “We try to embrace it. We’re hoping the guys will compete in every meet. We have to keep dropping our times. We got contributions across the board. We’re very happy with the effort.”

The race for the girls’ championship was much closer as the host Nordics won with 101 points. Crystal Falls Forest Park squeezed past Bark River-Harris 97-96 for runner-up honors and fourth-place Stephenson had 92.

Rock Mid Peninsula senior Hope Brunngraeber swept the girls’ weight events, taking discus with a personal-best throw of 105 feet, nine inches and shot put at 30-3½.

“This definitely lifts a weight off my chest,” she said. “It’s a relief to finally go over 100. When it started raining I got a little nervous. The footing wasn’t the greatest and my feet were slipping more during shot put, but I was able to power through.”

Forest Park senior Ava Fischer captured pole vault with a school-record leap of 8-10 and won the 100 hurdles (17.77) and 300s (49.97).

“I’m very happy with that,” she said. “This is the first time I did pole vault this year. It’s a great way to start and a big confidence builder. I’ve been trying to do this since my freshman year. I wasn’t expecting to win today, but I’m glad I did.”

BR-H junior Emma Zawada was runner-up in the 300 hurdles in a personal-best 50.07 seconds and helped the Broncos win the 400 and 800 relays.

Senior teammate Emma Riley added a first in long jump at 14-1½.

Stephenson senior Faith Cappaert has made a successful transition from distances to sprints, taking the 100 (13.66) and 400 (1:03.74) and finishing runner-up in the 200 by .13 second to Norway senior Lauren Adams.

Cappaert, who was clocked at 28.63 in the 200, also took the 800 (2:38.98).

“It’s definitely different,” she said. “It’s fun, though. Although, I still like my middle distance. I like the 800 the best. I need to work on my (starting) blocks. I did my first sprints at Niagara (April 23), then I was tired Saturday (at Pickford). That was definitely a long day. The meet at Rapid River (today at 2 p.m.) will be a good one. There will be a lot of competition over there.”

North Dickinson junior Aunika Lindholm was a double-winner, taking the 1600 (6:08.18) and 3200 (13:23.72).

The Rapid River boys had four individual winners. They were juniors Evan Closs in long jump (17-3) and Lane Olson in pole vault (8-0) and freshmen Coen Smith in high jump (5-6) and Corey Boston-Marsh in the 400 (56.8).

“People have been helping us in the weight room,” Ostrenga said. “Mark Christoff is helping us with pole vault. We’re getting help from Rich Poma in disc and Joe Smith in the weight room. Jenna Rubick filled in for Greg (Rubick) and we have (daughter) Stephanie helping with the sprinters. We really appreciate their help.”

Norway senior Josh Schiltz captured shot put (41-1½) and discus (131-6) and helped the Knights sweep the sprint relays.

BR-H junior Ben Knauf copped the 800 (2:15.16) and 1600 (4:53.89) and Mid Pen freshman Ashdeyn Gerow was second in the 1600 in a personal-best 5:03.44.

“We had a good day,” Mid Pen coach Carl Brunngraeber said. “The boys are super young, but they’re working hard. We had a lot of PBs today. Ashdeyn got a big personal-best in the 1600 and Hope had a PB in disc by seven feet. Our numbers are up this year. Between the boys and girls we have 35.”
