Rapid River boys earn top honors at Norway Invite
NORWAY — The Rapid River boys made the most of their first appearance in the Norway Invitational track and field meet, earning top honors with 142 points here Friday.
Bark River-Harris was runner-up at 130 and Florence-Niagara, Wis. edged the host Knights 70-69 for third place.
“They’re a really good team,” Rapid River coach Steve Ostrenga said of the Broncos. “McDonough (Gionni) is a great athlete. I was happy with all the guys. Our high jumpers came through and our sprinters did well. Our depth also came through. Our relays competed well and the distance runners had some PRs (personal records).”
Felch North Dickinson was crowned girls’ champion with 106 points, followed by BR-H 92 and Stephenson 70.
“A lot of things went our way today,” Nordics’ coach Mike Roell said. “A lot of kids stepped up. The kids really competed.”
This marked the first home meet in nine years for the Knights.
“Everything is all set, thanks to our referendum,” boys’ coach Al Trudeau said. “It’s great to be able to host a meet. Our students, physical education instructors and community members will be able to use it. We’ll be set for a long time. We have lots of help which is awesome.
“Our guys did all right. Our sprint relays went real well,”
McDonough won four events, including the boys’ 100-meter dash in 12.2 seconds, 110 hurdles at 16.69 and 300s (45.63) and long jump at 19 feet, 11½ inches.
“I’m very happy with that,” he said. “The track is nice and bouncy and the long jump area is really nice. Doing well as a team is really a nice boost for us.”
Junior Ben Knauf added a first in the 1600 (4:51.24) and second in the 800 (2:11.25). Classmate Lucas Martin took shot put (39-11½) and freshman Sam Varoni copped pole vault (10-6), edging Rapid River junior Lane Olson on a tie-breaker.
“It’s an awesome track,” BR-H boys’ coach William Soper said. “I’d be happy to come back here. I think we’re developing more of a team mentality. The kids are willing to do anything to help the team. We got Ben Olson back from shoulder surgery and Gionni just started practicing long jump yesterday (Thursday). We’re trying to find people for events that will match our strengths.”
Rapid River’s lone first came on freshman Coen Smith’s personal-best leap of 5-10 in high jump.
The Rockets, however, backed that up by placing in all of the other events.
“Lane did a nice job in pole vault and taking three places in the 3200 decided the issue,” Ostrenga said. “We had some adversity tonight. We had to scramble to put a 1600 relay team together. Our guys said it was a good track, and it was a very quick meet.”
Norway’s leader was senior Josh Schiltz, who captured discus (135-4) and helped the Knights sweep the sprint relays.
Senior Christian Anderson helped Florence-Niagara take the 1600 and 3200 relay and won the open 800 (2:09.95).
North Dickinson junior Aunika Lindholm took the girls’ 1600 (5:58.04) and 3200 (13:20.55), both season-bests and Alaiya Schemmel and sophomore Alyson Steinbrecher went 1-2 in the 800.
Schemmel was clocked at a personal-best 2:40.08 with Steinbrecher recording a season-best 2:40.42 and sophomore Aspen Anderson took pole vault at 7-6.
“Aunika did a nice job winning the 1600 and 3200 and helping our longer relays take first,” Roell said. “Aspen winning pole vault and going 1-2 in the 800 was also huge.”
BR-H junior Emma Zawada took the 300 hurdles (51.12) and helped the Broncos take the sprint relays.
Norway senior Lauren Adams was a triple-winner, taking the 100 (13.48), 200 (27.74) and 400 (1:03.65).
Rapid River sophomore Victoria Coppock recorded her first varsity victory in the 100 hurdles at 18.75 and placed fourth in the 300s (59.19).
“This is very exciting,” she said. “I haven’t been able to go to practice because of softball. The track is quite nice and this is probably the best weather we’ve had.”
Rockets’ senior Aubrey Olson captured discus with a personal-best throw of 97-3 and sophomore Natalie Paquette provided the Rockets with a first in high jump (4-7).
“We’re definitely improving,” Rockets’ coach Greg Rubick said. “We have nine girls who play softball which is great for them. We don’t see some of our athletes unless there’s a meet. Although, other teams are in the same boat.”
Stephenson junior Caitlyn Erickson took first in shot (29-2½) and second in disc (87-8).
