ESCANABA — It seems likely that Andrew Hamlin, sophomore athlete at Escanaba High School, will keep shattering his own track and field record for the high jump.
At the Eskymos Track and Field Invitational on Friday, May 1, Hamlin cleared a height of six feet and seven inches — breaking a record that he had just set.
Until two weeks ago, the school record for high jump had been 6 feet, 5 inches. That record had been set by Keenan Failing in 1978.
But on April 21, at a track meet in Gladstone, Hamlin flew over the bar set at 6 feet, 6 inches.
In doing so, he not only broke a 48-year record but also ranked among the top ten high jumpers in the state of Michigan at the high school level.

He is currently the number-one ranked sophomore high jumper in Michigan.
As Hamlin is only in 10th grade, he could theoretically continue participating in the sport for the Eskymos for another two years.
In the spring sport of track and field, Hamlin also competes in the 400-meter race and the long jump. At other times of year, he plays basketball and football.
A full story about Friday’s meet will appear in Monday’s paper.
