MANISTIQUE — It was windy and cold here Tuesday, but Maggie Karl didn’t let that interfere with her setting another school record in the Manistique Emerald track and field invitational.
Despite the elements, the Gladstone sophomore soared 10 feet, five inches in pole, three inches better than her previous record in the Delta County Invitational at Gladstone April 21.
“I focused a lot on technique,” she said. “I just went after it and got it. Everything else I kind of blocked out of my mind. I was pretty happy to get it.”
Marquette took home the team trophy with 125½ points, followed by Gladstone 107, Brimley 83 and Manistique 73.
“We’re pretty happy with that,” Braves’ coach Jim Murtha said. “I’d say this is a confidence boost. We weren’t too far behind them. We’re getting better and we need to keep doing that. Our relays are getting better. I was impressed with Brimley. They’re very competitive.”
The Marquette boys also won with 113 points. They were followed by Gladstone 81, Rudyard 68 and Escanaba 62.
Karl also won girls’ high jump at five feet and helped the Braves take second in the 400-meter relay in 56.23 seconds.
Classmate Ella Bracket added a first in the 400 (1:03.52) and was runner-up in the 200 (27.17).
Senior Lexi Gilbert, who helped the Braves win the 3200 relay (11:04.16), placed third in the 3200 in a personal-best 13:37.81.
Menominee junior Winley Brandt took the 3200 (13:11.04) and Rudyard freshman Ashlyn Mitchell took second (13:30.46).
“Winley ran a real nice race,” Gilbert said. “I wanted to break 13:40. I felt good throughout the race and it felt amazing to win the 3200 relay. That was a nice way for us to start out. This was definitely a confidence builder. Last year my mindset wasn’t as good, but there’s definitely more sense of urgency this year.”
Marquette senior Ella Fure, who will continue her running career at Grand Valley State University, won the 800 (2:33.05) and was third in the 400 (1:05.41).
“I wanted to get a good, hard workout and work my speed,” she said. “I also wanted to push myself and do races in which I’m less comfortable (in preparation for college). I’ve been as low as 2:26 in the 800 and ran a 10:55 in the 3200 in an indoor meet at Grand Valley.”
Freshman teammate Jordyn Anthony had a hand in four firsts, taking the 100 (12.96) and 200 (26.94) and helping the Sentinels win the sprint relays.
Senior Gwen Brewster provided Manistique with its lone first in shot put (31-9).
Esky sophomore Andrew Hamlin won boys’ high jump (6-6) and placed fourth in long jump (17-7) and helped the Eskymos take fourth in the 3200 relay (9:41.19).
“I wanted to get 6-8,” he said. “I got high enough, but messed up on the second jump. It was cold, but I don’t think it affected me that much.”
Marquette senior Ford Richardson copped the 100 (11.12), edging Gladstone junior Andrew Karl by .02 second, and 200 (23.14) in personal-best times and added a first in the 300 hurdles (41.66).
Esky junior Alex Ison also recorded PRs (personal records) while placing third in the 200 (24.1) and fourth in the 100 (11.73).
“It was exciting to see Alex run an 11.7 in the 100,” Esky coach Scott Dykema said. “Andrew got enough height to clear 6-8 in long jump, but it didn’t quite work out. He also did a nice job in the 4×800.
Manistique junior Sam Moose took shot put (43-0) and Esky junior Zahn Anderson was runner-up (41-7).
Rudyard senior Steve Kirschner became a triple-winner, taking the 800 (2:09.7), 1600 (4:40.04) and 3200 (11:17.56).
Esky, Gladstone and Manistique resume in Friday’s Negaunee Invitational.
