Gladstone sweeps in Iron Mountain in doubleheader action
GLADSTONE — The Gladstone Braves gave themselves plenty of momentum going into the second game of a baseball doubleheader here Thursday night.
After rallying past Iron Mountain 3-2 in eight innings in the first game, the Braves completed the sweep with an 11-1 triumph in four innings in the second game.
Landon Pepin’s single to centerfield in the bottom of the eighth sealed the verdict in the opener, enabling Vinny Rebholz to cross the plate with the game-winner.
“It’s amazing when you win a ball game how much of a difference it makes,” Braves’ coach Tyler Swanson said. “It just raises the mood of a team so much. Landon’s game-winner gave us such a boost. That was a well-played game. Iron Mountain’s pitcher threw strikes. They did everything they were supposed to do.”
The Mountaineers led 2-0 in the sixth before the Braves came back to tie the score.
Adam Burie’s double sliced Gladstone’s deficit in half before Carter Sanville’s single tied the contest.
Iron Mountain loaded the bases in the top of the eight, but was unable to score.
“The kids hung their heads a little,” Mountaineers’ coach Mike Pickett said. “There was a lot of emotion in the first game. We had them on the ropes. They’re a good ball club. I’m super proud of the effort.”
Gladstone wasted little time gaining the upper hand in the nightcap.
Winning pitcher Xavier Leipzig drilled a two-run double to left and Nick Proehl added an RBI single to center to give the Braves a 3-0 lead in the opening frame.
After Iron Mountain scored in the second, the Braves answered with three runs in their half of the inning.
Braylin Carter gave Gladstone a 4-1 lead on a wild pitch in the second.
Burie’s sacrifice fly to center made it 5-1 and Carter Sanville’s infield single enabled the Braves to gain a 6-1 advantage.
Gladstone put the game out of reach by scoring five times in the fourth.
Leipzig’s single to center gave the Braves their seventh run and Proehl added an RBI single to center to make it 8-1.
Rebholz then ripped a two-run single to left and Cooper Sanville then ended the contest on a single to left.
Leipzig and Proehl finished 3-for-3. Cooper and Carter Sanville, Pepin and Rebholz added two hits apiece to account for Gladstone’s 14 hits.
“It’s awesome to get some confidence,” Swanson said. “Getting out of that bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning in the first game was huge. Xavier has been very consistent. He’s throwing strikes.
Leipzig fired a three-hitter in the second game. He struck out three and walked one.
The Mountaineers got two of their hits in the second stanza.
“We’re trying to build,” Pickett said. “We have two seniors and some of the juniors hadn’t played since eighth grade. We’re trying to get the guys excited about baseball and putting in the work. Our communication on the field has gotten better. I coached a lot of these guys in Little League. We’re starting to put some of the pieces together.”
The Mountaineers (3-8) host Kingsford in a single game Monday and the Braves (8-9) host Menominee Tuesday.
