Eskymos sweep Braves in softball doubleheader

ESCANABA — The Escanaba Eskymos got their revenge on the Gladstone Braves here Monday as the Eskymos won both games of a softball doubleheader here Monday, winning the first game 7-6 on a walk-off single by Cam Buckley and took the second game via mercy rule 12-2.
“It felt great to get the winning hit,” Buckley said. “They got us on Saturday and I think we came out together as a team and I think that was big for us.”
Escanaba senior Landry Bray continued her dominance as she pitched 13 innings and picked up a pair of wins. Bray accumulated 16 strikeouts over the two games and allowed only eight runs.
“I went out there dealing with some injuries,” Bray said. “It felt better today and hopefully it stays like that moving forward.”
In the first game, Gladstone scored a pair of runs in the first inning on one hit to take a 2-0 lead.
The Eskymos responded in the bottom of the second inning as they scored three runs on four Braves errors which proved costly in the contest. The Eskymos led 3-2 after two innings of play. The score remained there until the fourth inning when the Eskymos added a run on an RBI-single by Chloe Dubord to extend the Eskymos lead to 4-2.
“Lauren was throwing a lot inside,” Dubord said. “I just prepared for it and sat back til I got a pitch I liked and was able to drive it deep.”
The Braves put up four runs in the top of the fifth inning to put the Braves back in front 6-4 as Emma Trombley flew out to score a run and Ava Goodman and Addy Sanville each had RBI-singles in the fifth inning.
The Eskymos tied the game in the top of the sixth inning as Chloe Dubord smashed a two-run triple to right field and Buckley’s RBI in the fourth quarter earned the Eskymos the win.
In game two, Dubord was 4 for 5 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs and Abby Derkos was 1 for 4 with three RBIs.
“They are all good hitters,” Eskymos coach Andy Fields said. They all have talent and today we got the bats going and I couldn’t be more happy for our girls.”
The Braves got on the board first as Lauren Pare reached on an error by the first baseman and later scored on a RBI-single by Malia Quigley.
The Eskymos responded in the bottom of the first inning as Addison Noblet and Derkos each had run producing singles to put the Eskymos up 2-1.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Eskymos added three runs highlighted by a two-run single by Derkos to extend the Eskymos lead to 5-1.
The Eskymos out-hit the Braves 16 to two in the second game and 24 to five on the day. The Eskymos will be on the road for a tournament in the Detroit area this weekend.
“We are excited for this weekend and what it has in store for us,” Fields said. “We did have some errors today and stuff that we need to clean up before this weekend.
