ESCANABA — The Escanaba Eskymos opened day one of their triangular with Swan Valley and Southgate Anderson with a pair of victories as they defeated Swan Valley 5-2 and beat Southgate Anderson 14-4 here Friday.

Escanaba opened up with Swan Valley who got on the board first on a sacrifice fly to center field by Brady Stephens to score a run.

The Eskymos responded in the bottom of the second inning as Cannon Arnt and Brian Boutilier each had run-producing singles to put the Eskymos up 2-1.

The Eskymos added to the lead in the third inning as Lennox Peacock singled to score a run and Graham Johnson flew out to score another run to put the Eskymos up 4-1.

“Our guys did a very good job today,” Eskymos coach Scott Hanson said. “Up and down the order everyone contributed and it started rough for Lenny but he locked in and pitched a solid game.”

Peacock earned the victory for the Eskymos as he allowed two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts, which tied a school record for career strikeouts and walked five.”

It’s a blessing to get to play for this program,” Peacock said. “We have a great coaching staff and a great group of guys that have my back and I have to thank them today.”

In the second game, the Eskymos wasted no time as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Peacock, Johnson and Ashton Rymkos each had singles that brought in a run and put the Eskymos up 3-0.

In the bottom of the third inning, freshman Alex Irving hit an RBI-single to extend the lead to 4-1 but the Eskymos were not done there as they scored four runs in the fourth inning to put the Eskymos up 8-2.

The Eskymos put up six runs in the sixth inning as they mercied Southgate 14-4.

Ashton Rymkos notched a complete-game victory in an unusual way as the Escanaba Eskymos rallied past Southgate Anderson 6-5 in a non-conference baseball game here Saturday.

Rymkos reached his pitch count limit while striking out the side in the seventh inning at Al Ness Field.

His pitch count reached 107 after striking out leadoff hitter Rico Valdevino.

The victory enabled the Eskymos to bounce back from a 9-4 loss to Saginaw Swan Valley in Saturday’s opener.

“This is huge for the team, especially against a team like that,” Rymkos said. “They’re the best teams we’re going to see in the regular season.

Ironically, it was Valdevino who ripped a grand slam home run over the leftfield fence to give the Detroit area visitors a 5-0 lead in the second.

“I had a hard time finding the strike zone,” Rymkos said. “One of our coaches talked to me after the second inning and it gave me a boost of confidence.”

Rymkos scored Esky’s first run on a double to leftfield by Lennox Peacock in the third.

In the fifth, Rymkos ripped a leadoff homer to left to make it 5-2.

“That felt good off the bat,” he said. “That gave the team momentum. They used a lot of pitchers. We had to adjust to different speeds.”

The Eskymos (16-5) shaved their deficit to 5-3 on a sacrifice fly to center by Kaiden Pastorik.

Two runs then scored on Brian Boutilier’s single to center, tying the score at five.

Rymkos then scored the game-winner on a sacrifice fly to center by Peacock in the sixth.

Southgate (16-7), which pitched by committee, allowed nine hits.

Rymos, Hughes and Peacock finished with two hits apiece. Trent Gariside led the visitors with a pair.

“It was an exciting weekend for us, going 3-for-4 against quality teams,” Esky coach Scott Hanson said. “Going into the weekend we didn’t think we’d go 3-1. Ashton threw 40-plus pitches in the second inning, then he really dug down. Overall, the game was phenomenal. The kids kept battling. They didn’t panic.”

Rymkos struck out five, walked two and allowed seven hits, including five in the second frame.

“We knew sooner or later we’d put the ball on the ball,” Hanson added. “This was a nice bounce-back game for us.”

In Saturday’s opener, the Eskymos trailed 9-1 in the seventh.

Bryce Bichler scored on a double to left by Hughes and the Eskymos added two runs on an error in the final frame.

Nolan Salasky led Swan Valley (23-4) with three hits and Jack Lagon had two.

Southgate then overcame an early 4-0 deficit to upend Swan Valley 9-6.
