ESCANABA — They say records are meant to be broken, for Escanaba sophomore Andrew Hamlin that was a fact for the second consecutive week.

Hamlin jumped six feet six inches at the Delta County Invite in Gladstone on April 21, that broke a 48 year record and Friday afternoon he jumped six feet seven inches to break his own record then nearly eclipsed six feet eight inches but just made contact with the bar.

“It feels really good,” Hamlin said. “I knew I wanted to break it again and to do it here at home with a bunch of friends and family here makes it extra special.”

Hamlin also picked up a win in the long jump as he jumped 18 feet and one half inch to earn the top spot. Hamlin also finished fourth in the 400 meter and also came in third in the 1600 meter relay along with his teammates, Adam Schroeder, Eli Englund and Landon Carro with a time of 3:52.54.

“Andrew puts a lot of work in to get here,” Eskymos coach Scott Dykema said. “He attends camps, works hard in practice and is a truly gifted athlete.

That wasn’t the only record setting performance as Gladstone junior Andrew Karl vaulted his way to a 14 feet five inch vault to tie the school record.

Maggie Karl finished first in the girls pole vault at eight feet over Houghton’s Reagan Aho at seven feet six inches and Escanaba freshman Rayne Harper at seven feet.

Marquette won the meet on the girls side with 139 points and Sault Ste. Marie took the boys’ side with a score of 135 1⁄2.

“We had a really good day considering the weather we had today,” Marquette coach Terri Todd said. “We brought 70 kids or so and everyone was working hard. Ford Richardson broke a record today and we gave kids that don’t get a chance to run in relays a chance today and everyone contributed and stepped up.”

Richardson, a senior at Marquette, finished in first place in three events: the 100 and 200 meter dashes and the 300 meter hurdles.

Gladstone sophomore Ella Bracket earned wins in the 200 and 400 meter dashes, second in the 100 meter dash and fourth in the long jump at 13′ 7″.

Bark River-Harris had a successful day in relays as Alexis Olson, Emma Zawada, Carli Erickson and Julia Nault won the 400 meter relay with a time of 54.99 and also won in the 800 meter relay coming in at 1:56.34.

The Eskymos will be back in action on Tuesday at the Manistique Invitational.
