Caden Tolliver wins first career feature at Escanaba Motor Speedway

ESCANABA — If felt more like a chill of an early fall then it did than the middle of spring here Saturday at the Escanaba Motor Speedway as the Radio Results Network and Delta Fence presented opening night.

The sport mod class was full of intrigue as Rick Gustavson spun out Robby Iverson on the final lap initially giving the feature win to Matt Valliquette. However per International Motor Contest Association (IMCA) once the leader is involved in an on track crash the race is over and they revert to the last completed lap giving the feature win to Iverson. Matt Valiquette had a strong run as he came from ninth on the starting grid to finish second and Anthony Harper came in third.

“Robby definitely had the faster car tonight,” Valiquette said. “You learn something everytime you go out on the track and we will make some adjustments. We want to be the fastest car on the track every week but tonight we were not.”

Doug Belgonia Jr. and Bradley Viau rounded out the top five. Valiquette picked up a win in heat race action as well as Gustavson and Matt Maki IV.

Calvin Stueck made the trip from Clintonville, Wis. to pick up a heat and feature sweep in the sport compacts. Mark Isley finished second, coming from eighth on the grid.

“We got off to a good start and were able to make some passes fast to get to the front,” Isley said. “We battled an issue with the car throughout but were able to battle through it and come home with the second place finish”

In the 600 sprint class, Caden Tolliver picked up the feature win from the tail of the grid.

“We had a rough heat race track was pretty dusty,” Tolliver said. “We had the worst redraw in the feature but we were able to get out front and run away and it feels good to win a feature here finally.”

Jayger Quinn finished second and Braxton Lundquist was third. Brayden Lundquist was fourth and won the heat race and Tyler May did not start after finishing fourth in the heat race.

The vintage modifieds saw Jeff Solomon take home the feature win while Dave Broeders was the winner in heat race action.

In the super mod class, Rick Ness picked up the feature win. Scott Degnan was second and Paul Hosking finished third and was the heat race winner. Ron Anderson and Abbi Yelle rounded out the top five.

In the junior sprints class, Julia Maki picked up the feature win starting from the pole position. Tanner Rae came in second and Wyatt Ammel finished third coming from sixth on the starting grid, Keagan Jensen finished fourth and won the heat race and Colten Yelle was fifth to round out the top five.

In the sportsman sprint class, Braxton Lundquist came away with the heat and feature sweep. Macy Degnan was second and Nathan Viau came in third. Tanner Hanson and Andrew Karl rounded out the top five.

In the street stock class, Paul Wagner came from fifth on the starting grid to pick up the win as well as a win in heat race action. Eric Mathieson had a strong run coming in second and Tony Begovac was third and also won a heat race. Jared Demuse came in fourth and Carter Gustavson was fifth moving up from 12th place on the starting grid. Brayden Lundquist won the other heat race but did not finish the feature race.

The Escanaba Motor Speedway will be back in action Saturday, the first green flag scheduled to drop at 6 p.m.
