GLADSTONE — Cooper Sanville struck out eight batters and Braxton Breirenbach was 3 for 4 at the plate with four RBIs as the Gladstone Braves cruised to a 12-2 win over the Manistique Emeralds in a MHSAA Division three district matchup here Tuesday.

The Braves jumped out to a quick lead after Sanville struck out two of the first three Manistique batters. Landon Pepin doubled and Xavier Leipzig singled before Aiden Burie hit a two-run single to put the Braves up 2-0.

We have to control what we can control,” Braves coach Tyler Swanson said.”We did a good job of that tonight and didn’t overlook our competition and made some big plays.”

The Braves added a run in the bottom of the second as Pepin drew a bases loaded walk to put the Braves up 3-0.

The Braves extended their lead in the bottom to 6-0 in the third as Breitenbach and Nick Proehl each had RBI-singles in the inning.

“I didn’t get on base the first time,” Breitenbach said. “The next couple hits I got more comfortable and it was a good day overall.”

The Emeralds finally got on the board in the top of the fourth inning as Cole Watchorn hit a lead-off double and later scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 6-1.

The Braves added five runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the Braves up 11-1. Breitenbach had a two-run double in the inning and Leipzig and Quinn Carlson each had run producing singles.

Sanville earned the win for the Braves allowing two runs on two hits with eight strikeouts and one walk.

“I did what I could,” Sanville said. “I threw strikes and my defense made big plays behind me.”

The Braves continue district action Friday in Gladstone.
