Bark River boys victorious at home invitational

HARRIS — The Bark River-Harris boys pulled out all the stops here Monday, earning top honors in their own invitational track and field meet with 125 points.

Rapid River was runner-up at 109 and Newberry edged Norway 78-76 for third place.

“We had a good day,” BR-H coach William Soper said. “We had a lot of PRs (personal records) all the way around. We had kids doing things they weren’t used to. The guys really wanted this one and winning at home makes it all the more special.”

The girls’ meet was extremely close with Manistique winning with 85 points. BR-H scored 84 and Newberry finished with 83.

BR-H junior Gionni McDonough was a triple-winner, taking the boys’ 110-meter hurdles in 16.37 seconds, 300s (46.52) and long jump at 19 feet.

Classmate Ben Knauf won the 800 at 2:09.07 and 1600 in a season-best 4:47.7.

“Overall, we’re getting better,” Soper said. “We just went all out. I’m excited for Friday. Gionni and Ben had real good days.”

Munising senior Dylan Adkinson took the 100 (12.03) and 200 (23.94) with McDonough placing second in the 100 (12.22).

Junior Lane Olson provided Rapid River with a first in pole vault (10-6) while edging BR-H freshman Samuel Varoni on a tie-breaker.

Rapid River freshman Corey Boston-Marsh copped high jump (5-10), edging classmate Coen Smith on a tie-breaker.

The Rockets also opened with a victory in the 3200 relay (9:18.65).

Manistique junior Sam Moose won shot put (43-10) and placed second in discus (125-5).

It was also a solid day for Norway senior Josh Schiltz, who captured disc (128-9) and again helped the Knights sweep the sprint relays.

The Manistique girls secured their victory by placing fourth in the 1600 relay (5:13.75).

Newberry won the day’s final race in 4:32.82 with BR-H runner-up at 4:55.41.

Senior Gwen Brewster provided Manistique with a first in shot put (32-5½) and senior Kyra Carlson took pole vault (9-0) by edging Baraga junior Elisa Delene on a tie-breaker.

Big Bay de Noc sophomore Destiny Bleau collected three firsts, taking the 100 (13.3), 200 (26.37) and high jump (5-0).

“I didn’t do the 400 today,” she said. “I scaled back a little because of the regional (today at Rapid River), but I’m having a pretty good year.”

Big Bay senior Caragan Thill copped the 300 hurdles in a personal-best 49.66 seconds and BR-H junior Emma Zawada also ran a PB (49.85) while taking second.

They were followed by Munising sophomore Addie Bowerman in a season-best 51.4 and Carney-Nadeau freshman Kenny Thiry at a personal-best 51.78.

Thiry won the 100 hurdles (17.94) and long jump (14-1) and helped the Wolves take fourth in the 400 relay (59.03).

“I feel stronger than last year,” she said. “This is really a big confidence builder. My starts went pretty well. I spent a lot of time in the weight room during the off-season and did some pre-season work. I think everything went pretty good. I was so close to the school record in the 300 hurdles. The weather was nice, which I think helped.”

Newberry, led by senior Samantha Taylor, grabbed the top three places in the 1600.

She was clocked at 5:11.43 in the 1600 and won the 3200 in a season-best 11:21.44.

Junior Abby Taylor captured the 800 in a school-record 2:23.59 and freshman Molly McNamara was runner-up in a personal-best 2:35.3.

“This feels great,” Abby Taylor said. “It’s a big relief to finally get it. Doing all the 200s in practice really helped. It has been cold at all the other meets. It felt good to finally get a nice day. I think this gives me a lot of momentum going into the regional (Friday at St. Ignace).”

Abby Taylor was second in the 1600 (5:30.16) with McNamara running a PB (5:46.35).

“Abby has been working real hard for that,” Newbery coach Cori Autterson said. “In fact, all the girls have. We don’t have a lot of numbers, but performance-wise we’re doing well. Our top three distance runners get us a lot of points. Manistique is having heck of a season and it looks like Bark River-Harris is doing pretty well.”

Rapid River freshman Evonna LaCosse was runner-up in the 3200 in a personal-best 13:03.93.

“This feels really good,” she said. “She (Sam Taylor) is a really good runner. I tried to stay with her. I think this gives me confidence going into the regional.”

The Rockets, who host the Division 3 regional today at 2:30, got a first on senior Aubrey Olson’s personal-best throw of 98-6 in disc.
