Sports Flashback March 29-April 4

March 29, 1961 — Spalding Benson’s Service advanced in the 28th Annual Gold Medal Basketball tournament at Hermansville, defeating Escanaba Y Tavern in a Class B contest. Maurie Poupore led Benson’s with 26 points. Roger Murray hit 14 and Jerry Wells scored 10. Jim Hamelin paced Y Tavern with 19 and John Berrigan had 14.

March 30, 1961 — L&R Sports Shop captured the Escanaba City League tournament title by defeating Stonehouse Restaurant 69-58. John Butrymowicz and Jerry Cvengros paced the winners with 23 points each. Harold Johnson chipped in with 11. Jim Dubord scored 22 and Len Larson added 13 for Stonehouse.

April 3, 1961 — Eight area basketball players were selected to the All-Upper Peninsula team. Escanaba seniors John Fisher and John Olson landed berths in Class A. Holy Name junior Con Yagodzinski received a first-team berth in Class B with Manistique junior John Pelon named to the second team. Gladstone junior Gary Kircher earned second-team honors in Class C with Hermansville senior Irwin Scholtz named to the first team and Powers-Spalding senior Joe Murray and Perkins senior Bill LaChance were selected to the second team in Class D.

Marquette Thermo-Fax captured the Class A title in the Gold Medal tournament, rolling past Trout Creek 86-58. Frank Hamilla led Thermo-Fax with 28 points and Esky graduate Mike Mileski added 17. Bruce Knivela was Trout Creek’s leader with 22.

March 29, 1971 — Char Savoie of Gladstone recorded a pair of national honor count series at Midway Lanes. She rolled a 632, followed by 641 in the Mixed Doubles League. She opened with a pair of 202 games, followed a 228, then hit 215-193-233 games in the 641 series.

March 31, 1971 — Labre’s of Spalding advanced in the 33rd Annual Gold Medal Classic basketball tournament, posting a 75-61 triumph over Marinette-Menominee YMCA in a Class B contest at Hermansville. Len Welling and Rick Smith led the winners with 21 points each. Jan Roland paced YMCA with 23 and Rocky Slawinski added 16.

April 1, 1971 — Five Holy Name cagers landed berths on the All-Great Northern Conference basketball team. They include senior forwards Joe Joran and Gary Kleiman, senior center Joe Harvey, senior guard Tom Ness and junior guard Bill Skradski. Joran and Kleiman also gained Class B honorable mention on the Associated Press all-state team.

Escanaba senior center Tom Kangas and senior guard Mike Cousineau were also selected to the All-GNC team, with Kangas also landing a berth on the all-state Class A team.
