Ethan Marta named Mr. Basketball

MARQUETTE — Ethan Marta enjoyed a solid senior season and was rewarded for his efforts during the 76th Annual boys’ basketball meeting of the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association here Monday.
The 6-foot-3 Ishpeming Westwood cager finished his career with 2,069 points while earning the Mr. Basketball Award and Player of the Year honors in the WestPAC and Mid-Peninsula Conferences.
Marta averaged 28 points a game this season and scored a career-high 46 in a contest against Negaunee.
The Michigan Tech recruit also averaged 7.6 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 3.6 steals and was a 57-percent field goal shooter this season.
Marta’s final tally ranks 36th in state history which helped him earn Player of the Year honors in Division 1-3 and land an all-state D-3 first-team berth. He also helped the Patriots reach the state semifinals a year ago.
Joining him on the Dream Team were 6-3 Menominee senior Tanner Theuerkauf, 6-0 Pickford senior Gunner Bennin, 6-3 Crystal Falls Forest Park junior Vic Guiliani and 6-0 Dollar Bay senior Liam Tourttilott.
Theuerkauf, who carried averages of 17.6 points, five rebounds and 2.2 assists, was selected Great Northern Conference Player of the Year. He passed the 1,000-point mark as a junior and led the Maroons to the D-3 state basketball semifinals and the D-7 state football title last fall.
He also gained the Mr. Football Award in the U.P. and an all-state berth.
Tourttilott scored more than 1,800 points, which was a school record. The Copper Mountain Conference MVP averaged 20.2 points, 6.7 boards, 3.4 assists and 2.5 steals and shot 43 percent from 3-point range.
He helped the Blue Bolts finish 24-3 and reach the D-4 state semifinals where they fell to Detroit Douglass 58-47.
Guiliani recovered from a football injury in time to earn Skyline Central Conference Player of the Year honors. He averaged 20.6 points, 7.1 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 2.1 assists and hit 61 percent of his field goals.
A year ago, Guiliani received the Mr. Basketball Award and gained a D-4 all-state first-team berth.
Bennin was voted Player of the Year in the Eastern U.P. Conference and averaged 15.3 points, 7.5 boards and 3.5 assists. He joined the 1,000-point club in February and helped the Panthers get to the state quarterfinal at Gladstone where they dropped a 55-46 decision to Dollar Bay.
Marquette was voted Team of the Year in D-1. Menominee received similar honors in D-3 with Dollar Bay the top pick in D-4.
The Sentinels, who finished 18-8, reached the regional final where they fell to perennial power Rockford 58-39. Menominee (23-5) got to the state semifinals where it dropped a 78-66 to the Arts & Technology Academy of Pontiac.
Menominee’s Sam Larson was selected Division 1-3 Coach of the Year with Dollar Bay’s Jesse Kentala gaining the top honor in D-4.
