Davey earns All-UP Honors in boys basketball

MARQUETTE — Four area athletes landed berths on the All-Upper Peninsula boys’ basketball team in balloting at the 76th Annual meeting of the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association here Monday.

Gladstone junior guard Lonnie Davey earned first-team honors in Division 1-3 and sophomore backcourt mate Alex Prins and Bark River-Harris junior Gionni McDonough landed second-team berths.

Superior Central junior Andrew Charlebois received enough votes to make the second team in D-4

Davey, a first-team selection in the Great Northern and Mid-Peninsula Conferences averaged 20.5 points a game with Prins, an All-M-PC first-team pick, averaging 12.4 and four rebounds per contest.

McDonough finished with averages of 13.6 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists and hit 53 percent of his field goals.

Charlebois averaged 15.5 points, 5.9 boards and two steals.

Escanaba’s Hayven Sandoval-Nolde received special mention in Division 1-3.

Hannahville senior Sam Beaver, who was selected Player of the Year in the Northern Lights League, received special mention in D-4.

Those gaining honorable mention include Esky senior Braden Cooper, Gladstone’s Will Inghram and Bark River-Harris senior Brayden Derouin and juniors Ben Knauf and Gabe Spear in Division 1-3.

Area honorable mention recipients in D-4 are Powers North Central senior Brooks Castle and junior Kaden Malone, Superior Central junior Ryder Kroupa and Rapid River junior Lane Olson.

Derouin averaged 12 points and 3.1 assists per contest.

Olson, a 76-percent free throw shooter, shot 56 percent from the floor and averaged 11.1 points and two assists. He was also considered the Rockets’ best defensive player.

Kroupa finished at 11 points, five assists, three boards and 1.6 steals and Malone carried averages of nine points, four rebounds and three assists and Castle averaged eight points and seven boards.
